U.C.L.A. and U.S.C. Are Expected to Leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten

Overshadowed by the potential financial windfall is the increased burden placed on athletes, be they football players or distance runners, who will regularly travel to make round trips from Los Angeles to far-flung campuses in State College, Pa.; New Brunswick, N.J.; and College Park, Md., for competition.
The deal could lift a shadow from the tenure of Kevin Warren, the Big Ten commissioner since 2019, who drew criticism in 2020 when his league initially decided not to play the fall football season because of the pandemic. Although the conference ultimately reversed its decision and staged a fraction of the games it had planned, the episode has followed Warren since. (The Pac-12, under Larry Scott, also canceled and revived its 2020 football season.)
At the same time, the departures of U.S.C. and U.C.L.A. pose a sharp test for George Kliavkoff, who became fitness the Pac-12 commissioner a year ago. Last August, in the wake of the decisions by Oklahoma and Texas, the league said it did not plan to expand “at this time,” in part because of “the current competitive strength and cohesiveness of our 12 universities.”
In a statement on Thursday, the Pac-12 said it was “extremely surprised and disappointed” by the day’s developments and suggested that it would be open to adding members.
For now, at least, the conference’s membership includes California, Oregon, Stanford, Utah and Washington.
Kevin Draper contributed reporting.

Libra Monthly Horoscope

MONTH OF June
This is a month to get your message out there, Libra! The Sun is in Gemini and your outspoken, worldly ninth house until June 21, handing you the mic to share your visionary ideas. On June 14, the Sagittarius supermoon further amplifies your voice when it illuminates your communication sector. Make an effort to connect with kindred spirits both locally and from afar this month. Just watch those bumpy final days of Mercury retrograde as the planet of information and interactions will be off-kilter until June 3.
Partnering up could have even more long-lasting benefits that unfold over the next year. Lucky and expansive Jupiter is spending its first full month in Aries, bringing major growth to your sector of relationships. Stay open to people who are different from your usual type and perhaps a long-distance connection. In romance and business, a no-limits approach will serve you best—and that includes geography!
Need some focus after all that social energy, Libra? On June 21, Cancer season begins and the Sun starts its monthlong visit to your tenth house of career and ambition. You’ll be charged up to turn a few of those big ideas into tangible achievements you can take to the bank! While others steal away to the beach, you’ll want to lean in to your goals and make headway over the next four weeks.
Two slow-moving outer planets turn retrograde this month, joining already-in-reverse Pluto. On June 4, disciplined Saturn makes a U-turn in your fifth house of romance and indulgence, a time to curb the excess and delay a little gratification (we know, we know). Dreamy Neptune goes retrograde in your health and wellness zone for five months starting June 28. Double down on the seasonal produce and supplements, and make an added effort to balance work and play. As long as you aim for moderation instead of deprivation, it shouldn’t hurt a bit. You’ve got this, Libra. Gemini season makes the world your oyster This June is yours for the taking, Libra! The Sun is sailing through Gemini and your ninth house of travel, risk-taking and adventure until June 21, inspiring you to see boundless possibilities. Exciting news pours in, and stalled opportunities pick up momentum. (Pinch yourself if you must, but it’s really happening.)
Forget about playing it safe, something your measured sign is known to do. There are moments in life when you have to take a leap of faith—and this month will present more than a few! Maybe that’s into a startup business venture or a return to school since the ninth house rules entrepreneurship and higher education. What lights you up? During Gemini season, your main job is to feed your insatiable curiosity.
Is there someone in YOUR life that could use an uplifting new outlook? Don’t keep all of that positivity to yourself, Libra. Pay it forward by sharing books, ideas, tools and teachings that have helped you through a shadowy time. You never know how much a struggling friend could feel saved by the wisdom you share. Don’t underestimate your Yoda-like powers now. As the saying goes, “To the world, you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world.” Saturn goes retrograde in Aquarius June 4-October 23 Slow your roll there, Libra. Structured Saturn does an about-face in Aquarius and your romantic, creative fifth house on June 4, tapping the brakes on any fast-moving love affairs until October 23. Want to build a strong relationship? Get ready to roll up your sleeves and do the hard but necessary work it takes. That means getting a handle on your reactions and leaning in to your reserve tanks for some signature Libra patience. Tone down the drama and knee-jerk reactions and avoid people who push your buttons, especially where alcohol might be involved. That breezy rooftop cocktail party could turn into an ugly scene if you’re not careful.
Some Libras might take a break from dating or wise up about your romantic choices. A case of cold feet is possible during this Saturn backspin. Since the fifth house rules fertility, baby-making plans could stall, or you may experience trouble getting pregnant. Saturn retrograde helps you get your life in order so you actually have the space for a new addition to the family. Do the words “too much too soon” ring a bell?
You could have second thoughts about a passion project over the next five months. Maybe you’ve got a killer idea but you need to go back to the drawing board and craft a marketing plan or strengthen the plotline of your screenplay. Saturn rules mentors, and working with a coach can help you polish and prep for the big leagues.  The June 14 Sagittarius full supermoon spotlights communication Got a message to share with the world? You’ll be handed the mic promptly on June 14, when the Sagittarius full moon beams into your third house of communication and ideas. There’s no holding back today, Libra. Do you have a powerful point to deliver through writing, speaking or teaching? A social media post could also go viral over the next two weeks. Look back to the December 4, 2021, Sagittarius new moon, which was also a potent solar eclipse, for clues of what could be in the spotlight now.
Have you been searching for a new neighborhood, either to live or hang out in? This full moon in your local action sector can help you pinpoint the perfect new zip code. A sibling, neighbor or colleague may figure into events today. Got something to get off your chest? La luna in outspoken Sagittarius could clear the way for a candid—and much-needed—talk. The full moon could find you fielding a LOT of options, so try not to get overwhelmed. Explore the range of choices and weigh their benefits and shortcomings. Cancer season (June 21) and the June 28 Cancer new moon Fire up those ambitious plans now, Libra! Starting June 21, the Sun moves into Cancer and your structured, successful tenth house for a month. While others escape to the beach, you may be keeping cool by the A/C crafting a Canva pitch deck or fielding VIP meetings. health Now it’s much easier to set milestones and approach them systematically, in every part of your life. Choose your top priorities and focus on those.
The June 28 Cancer new moon calls on you to own your power. You could receive a prestigious leadership opportunity or recognition for your talents. Is public speaking in your future? You may be invited to give a talk or keynote speech. This is no lucky break, Libra—you worked hard to earn it. New moons kick off new six-month chapters, and this one will culminate at the January 2023 Cancer full moon. Get super-precise about where you’d like to be by early next year, setting intentions and creating actionable steps to get there. Your father or an important man could play into events near this date.
Unlike the full moon earlier this month, which was a supermoon, this one is a “micro-moon.” This effect occurs when a new or full moon connects with the point in the moon’s orbit that’s farthest from the Earth (called apogee), making it appear smaller from our vantage point here. That doesn’t mean the distant moon won’t work its magic—and we can’t see the new moon anyhow—but it may not be quite as impactful as a supermoon, which occurs when la luna is at the CLOSEST point (perigee) to our planet. Neptune turns retrograde June 28-December 3 Bolster your wellness routines, Libra, because sticking to them over the summer could be challenged. On June 28, foggy Neptune will start its annual five-month retrograde backspin through your orderly and health-conscious sixth house. Your discipline could get a little wobbly, especially if you take on too much. Instead of trying to do a million things to perfection, choose two or three summer goals (maximum) and do them really well.
With Neptune reversing through your wellness sector, some body image distortion is possible. Have your controlled eating habits veered into “orthorexic” territory? If you’ve eliminated one too many food groups from your diet, consider a more moderate stance now (especially because, well, summer!). We’re not saying you should abandon all discipline or ignore any doctor’s orders. Just make sure YOU don’t try to play amateur health coach without consulting an expert.
The sixth house rules the digestive system, so if yours has been sluggish, consider a gentle cleanse or taking a microbiome test to assess your gut health. But again, avoid any self-diagnosing here—and if you’re behind on checkups, get those appointments on the books.
The urge to merge reaches scorching summer temperatures as impassioned Mars roars through hot-blooded Aries and your partnership realm all month. This hasn’t happened in two years, and while the red planet is here until July 5, you may be bursting at the seams with strong emotions and thoughts about commitment. For couples, spicy Mars can reignite your attraction to each other and spark a sensual renaissance.
Great as it all sounds, there’s a catch. Mars drives up your motivation—but at the same time it can spark competition, jealousy and anger. The trick to riding that bronco is not being too quick to react. Under this transit, your normally patient sign will have trigger-finger reflexes and even a few angry outbursts. Make a point to be diplomatically direct and to address any upsets as soon as they happen so bad feelings don’t fester.
Or maybe you settle them in the boudoir? Amorous Venus is making its annual visit to Taurus and your erotic eighth house until June 22, cranking up your sex appeal. If you’ve got a consenting partner, the world might not see much of you since you may barely venture outside of the bedroom. Single Libras could become engaged in a Olympics-worthy flirt-fest, which is fine and good as long as you’re clear about your intentions.
On June 22, Venus will exit the canoodling cocoon and bound into Sagittarius, activating your adventurous ninth house until July 17. Under this frisky and optimistic influence, you’ll be attracted to people from different walks of life—possibly hailing from another country or culture. Traveling will keep the flames hot for couples, even if you can only swing a weekend getaway or a sexy staycation.
Team up with a complementary person when it comes to your ambitious idea this month, Libra. Go-getter Mars is in Aries all month, heating up your partnership sector and bringing dynamic duo energy surging into your life. Don’t be surprised if you go from cocktails to contracts in short order! Someone you meet at an industry event might turn out to be the missing link—or so it seems. But because impatient Mars gives the tendency to rush, explore thoroughly before signing on the dotted line.
Got a message to share with the world? Earmark the Sagittarius full supermoon on June 14, which beams into your communication sector. How can you share your ideas in a creative and inspirational way? Whether you throw an event, host a trunk show or send out a captivating email blast, appeal to people’s desire to be part of something exciting, bigger than themselves.

Skate insider program to offer early access to playtests of Skate 4

Electronic Arts on Thursday reminded fans of its Skate series still waiting for Skate 4 that, yes, the developer is “still working on it” — still! — and is inviting players to sign up for a chance to play the next Skate game early to provide feedback on its development. EA also shared a “pre-pre-pre-alpha” look at the new Skate on YouTube, showing off new features health and gameplay in a video.
“We told you we’re back, and we’re still working on it,” Skate developer Full Circle said on the game’s official website, “but it’s time for you to see what we’ve been up to. It’s still early, but we want to get this right and that means we want you to be a part of it.”
EA says that Skate fans can play “early versions of the game” and provide feedback, noting that those playtests will be closed, invite-only, and that users won’t be permitted to share video, screenshots, or livestreams of what they play. More details about the playtesting program are available in an FAQ on EA’s website.
A new Skate game was officially confirmed in 2020, after a yearslong campaign in which fans of the franchise flooded EA’s social media channels with the #skate4 hashtag in an attempt to convince the publisher to revive the skateboarding series. In 2021, EA announced the team creating the new Skate, a studio branded Full Circle. Leading Full Circle is Daniel McCulloch, formerly a general manager of Xbox Live at Microsoft, and Deran Chun and Chris “Cuz” Parry as Skate’s “creative leadership.” The most recent Skate game was Skate 3, released in 2010. The series was originally developed by EA’s Black Box studio in Vancouver. That team was merged into EA Canada and Black Box closed in 2013.

USC, UCLA planning to leave Pac-12 for Big Ten in 2024 with announcement imminent

Pac-12 powerhouses USC and UCLA are finalizing discussions to leave the conference for the Big Ten as early as the 2024 athletic season, sources tell CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander and Dennis Dodd. Though the move is not yet official, it appears as if the Big Ten is aiming to make a significant acquisition that will fitness change the college sports landscape.

An announcement expected to address USC and UCLA’s intensions is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET, sources close to the situation tell Dodd.

“Everything is on the table,” a Pac-12 source tells Norlander.

Big Ten presidents and athletic directors met Wednesday night to discuss adding USC and UCLA to the league, according to The Athletic.

The transition of USC and UCLA to the Big Ten would be similar to the one that rocked college sports last summer when Texas and Oklahoma opted to leave the Big 12 for the SEC, a move set to transpire ahead of the 2025 season.

That kicked off a realignment bonanza in which the Big 12, American and other conferences saw teams move in and out of their membership. A similar situation will likely occur here if USC and UCLA formalize their intentions to depart the Pac-12.  The move would also constitute a stunning divergence in direction for UCLA and Cal, partners in the University of California system.

In acquiring the Trojans and Bruins, the Big Ten would transform from largely a midwest conference to one that extends to the West Coast. It would be a significant shift in the college sports landscape at the Power Five level, which has largely been localized with teams mostly belonging to leagues in their geographic area.

USC and UCLA would bring the Big Ten to a total of 16 teams, the same number as the SEC once Texas and Oklahoma enter their fold. The ACC has 14 teams, while the Big 12 will settle at 12 with BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF in the fold after UT and OU depart.

This acquisition would be a significant coup for fourth-year Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren, the first Power Five boss to cancel the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The news comes less than a year after the Big Ten and Pac-12 — along with the ACC — announced a strategic alliance following the SEC’s additions of Texas and Oklahoma. That alliance was light on substantive action from the start, and the Big Ten’s poaching of two Pac-12 powers only further undermines the notion that the leagues will work together in combatting the SEC’s growing hold on power in college sports.

With the Pac-12’s media rights deal expiring in 2024 and the Big Ten in the midst of negotiating a new media rights deal that could start as soon as next season and reportedly exceed $1 billion per year, the timing is natural for such discussions. The expiration of that Pac-12 deal should leave USC and UCLA with little financial burden should they ultimately choose to depart for the Big Ten.

The San Jose Mercury-News’ Jon Wilner first reported that USC and UCLA were planning to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten.

Red Sox hang on for 6-5 win over Blue Jays

TORONTO – Late-game dramatics. Post-season intensity. Even a dugout-clearing dust-up. The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays heightened their rivalry Wednesday in a 10-inning matchup between American League East teams who seem primed for a standings battle over the second half of the season.
Boston managed to avoid a three-game sweep by hanging on for a 6-5 victory at Rogers Centre. Matt Strahm (3-2) gave up two runs in the bottom of the 10th before getting George Springer on a flyout with runners in scoring position to end it.
“It’s like playing playoff games every day,” said Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo. “That’s how it feels and that’s all good. It’s not going to stop.”
Boston scored three runs in the top of the 10th as reliever David Phelps (0-2) issued two walks before hitting a batter to bring automatic runner Jackie Bradley Jr., home with the go-ahead run. Alex Verdugo tacked on a two-run double off Tim Mayza.

Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio drove in a run apiece in the bottom half but were left stranded as Boston (43-33) won for the eighth time in 10 games.
Verdugo also homered and Franchy Cordero had four hits for the Red Sox, who moved a half-game up on third-place Toronto with the victory. Springer hit a solo shot for the Blue Jays (42-33). Related Videos 4:18 Jays Care Foundation campaign aims to get more kids on the diamond “We fell a little bit short but we’re just going to keep fighting, keep getting after it and keep trying to win games,” said Toronto starter Alek Manoah.
After starting a rally with a pinch-hit single in a walkoff victory a night earlier, Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk helped get the offence going again in the series finale.
He drew a leadoff walk from Boston starter Nick Pivetta in the second inning and moved to second on a Raimel Tapia single. Espinal later drove in Kirk with the game’s opening run. Trending Stories Story continues below advertisement
Cordero tied it when he scored on a Rob Refsnyder sacrifice fly in the third. Tension rose in the bottom half of the frame after Pivetta hit Kirk in the left elbow with a pitch.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., had some words for the Victoria native from the dugout and led the charge as the dugouts and bullpens emptied. The two squads mostly jawed with each other and Springer corralled Guerrero to help prevent things from escalating.
Kirk, one of the hottest hitters in the major leagues, stayed in the game.
“I don’t know what the intents were,” Montoyo said. “I won’t be able to read their minds, I’m not that smart. I just know what I know but I keep it to myself.”
Toronto loaded the bases but Tapia struck out to end the threat.
“I don’t hit a lot of guys,” Pivetta said. “I think it’s unwarranted the way they reacted. It’s not what I’m trying to do in that situation.”
Springer put a charge into the announced crowd of 27,601 in the fifth inning with his 15th homer of the season. His defensive skills were in form, too, as he made a nice diving catch in the sixth on a sinking liner from J.D. Martinez.
Xander Bogaerts singled later in the frame and scored on Verdugo’s sixth homer of the year.

Pivetta was pulled after issuing a leadoff walk to Biggio in the seventh inning. The Canadian was treated to a chorus of boos as he walked to the dugout.
Toronto pulled even in the eighth inning. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., hit a one-out double fitness and pinch-runner Bradley Zimmer scored on a Tapia double off reliever Ryan Brasier.
The Red Sox had a runner on third base with one out in the ninth inning against Jordan Romano but he struck out pinch-hitter Bobby Dalbec and got Bradley on a flyout.
The game took three hours 54 minutes to play.
PITCHING PLANS
The probable pitchers for Toronto’s upcoming five-game series against Tampa Bay have yet to be formally unveiled but manager Charlie Montoyo said Yusei Kikuchi was tabbed for the opener Thursday night.
Jose Berrios will pitch Friday and Kevin Gausman will start Saturday, although it wasn’t determined whether he’d start Game 1 or 2 of the doubleheader.
MARTIN HONOUR
Former Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin will be honoured during the pre-game ceremonies on Canada Day to recognize his impact on Canadian baseball.
The four-time all-star was born in Toronto and raised in Montreal. Martin played 1,693 big-league games over 14 seasons before retiring last month.

Protect Your Hearing from Fireworks This Fourth of July

June 29, 2022 – Kendall Johnson, of Sioux Falls, SD, was a teenager when he had surgery to try to restore his hearing. While he and his friends lighted up fireworks on the Fourth of July one summer, one exploded right fashion in front of his face. Johnson says he lost nearly all his hearing that night and needed surgery to repair his eardrum.
The loud noise from fireworks can damage your hearing, causing hearing loss and tinnitus, what the Mayo Clinic describes as a ringing, humming, or pulsing sound in your ears.
“I can’t tell the difference between left or right anymore because of the tinnitus; it’s hard to differentiate between the two ears,” says Johnson.
Cases like Johnson’s are why the American Academy of Audiology is warning Americans to protect their hearing this Fourth of July.
Fireworks can cause permanent hearing loss in children and adults. According to the academy, they can be as loud as 155 decibels. For comparison, the noise from a jackhammer is 100 decibels and the sound of a jet taking off is 150 decibels from 80 feet away. The CDC warns that any noise above 120 decibels is enough to damage your hearing. Backyard fireworks like the ones Johnson used are the most harmful for your hearing, it says.
“Never hold a firework or firecracker, with the intention to throw it before it explodes,” says Sarah Sydlowski, AuD, president of the American Academy of Audiology. “If it is anywhere close to you when it explodes, your hearing can be immediately and permanently damaged.”
Children are especially vulnerable to hearing loss from loud fireworks, she notes, as their “excitement and curiosity” about them may draw them closer to the damaging noise.
There are many causes of hearing loss, such as aging, diseases, and certain medications. But the National Institute on Aging says that loud noises are one of the most common.
Lindsey Jorgensen, AuD, chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Dakota, says that loud sounds like fireworks cause damage to the cochlea, the “organ of hearing” inside the inner ear. The American Academy of Audiology says that signs of hearing loss can include muffled hearing, a hard time understanding conversations, and hearing ringing or buzzing noises after being around loud fireworks. Johnson has had hearing loss since the fireworks incident as a teen. But he says that tinnitus is the worst issue he’s had from it.
“Losing hearing is one thing, and surgery is one thing, but tinnitus is another thing,” he says. “Tinnitus is a killer. If you could solve tinnitus, people will give you whatever they have to come up with a cure.”
Avoiding noisy situations is the best way to prevent hearing loss, according to the CDC. Earplugs and earmuffs can protect your hearing from loud fireworks while you celebrate. It’s possible that hearing loss may last only a few minutes or hours after a loud noise, according to Jorgensen. But she warns that it’s “hard to predict if hearing loss will recover, so protecting your hearing when you are around loud noises is the best way to ensure protection from hearing loss.”

The Best Beaches in Montenegro to Visit

When people talk about heading out for a holiday at the beach, normally they talk about visiting Mexico, Spain, Greece or Indonesia. These are common destinations for nice summer holidays, but what if I told you Montenegro, the hidden gem of the Adriatic Sea, has five must-visit, jaw-dropping amazing beaches?

Allow me to tickle your travel bone with these incredible beaches in Montenegro.

Sunset in Boka Bay

Best beaches in Montenegro

Montenegro (Crna Gora as the locals call it) doesn’t have the popularity that Croatia has, most people can’t even locate it on a map, but this is a blessing in disguise as it has kept Montenegrin beaches tranquil, clean and (most importantly) extremely accessible for all types of budgets.

I’m not kidding!

You can have a full day at the beach in Montenegro for less than 15 EUR! If this is enough to wake your curiosity then allow me to show you the best 5 beaches that this incredible ex-Yugoslavian country offers.

1. Luštica Bay

Located in the Luštica Penninsula, where it gets its name, this beach serves as an entrance to Boka Kotorska or the Bay of Kotor. In the past, Luštica used to be a rural community, isolated from big touristic centers such as Podgorica or Herceg Novi, this relative isolation has caused a small but steadily growing tourism boom in the region.

As a result, Luštica is becoming an attractive destination for those looking for some peace and quiet. In summer, a lot of Serbians, western Europeans and Russians visit Luštica Bay and, as a result, the local population has adapted by offering various types of entertainment and local products.

Today you can find tons of activities to enjoy here! Kayaking and stand up paddle boarding tours are always available and restaurants are famous for carrying only local produce! Luštica produces its own olive oil, cheese, prosciutto, wine and rakija. Take my word for it, you can’t leave Luštica without trying some!

2. Perast

Located at the very beginning of the Bay of Kotor, Perast is a pretty little town and so is its beach. Even so, this is a place you need to schedule in your visit! There’s a legendary small artificial island by the name of Gospa od Škrpjel (Our Lady of the Rocks) within eyesight from land, and you can paddle board all the way there!

It’s an experience of a lifetime.

Gospa od Škrpjel

“Why would this be entertaining?” you ask, because of the legend this island carries. It says that the islet was created over the centuries by local seamen and that, upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the Bay thus making the islet emerge from the sea. This custom is alive even nowadays. Every year an event called Fašinada is hold during the sunset of the 22 July, local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, widening the surface of the island.

Apart from the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, Gospa od Škrpjel has a museum, a small gift shop and a navigation light. All worth the effort!

3. Tivat

Home of the luxury yacht marina Porto Montenegro, Tivat is a beach in Montenegro for those looking for comfort and luxury. A relatively new town in the Boka region, Tivat is one of the post popular touristic beaches in Montenegro.

It’s home to Plavi Horizonti, a full sand beach in front of the two famous islands of Ostrvo Sveti Marko (Sveti Marko island) and Ostrvo Miholjska Prevlaka (Island of Flowers).

Sunset at Porto Montenegro

Sveti Marko Island is a mostly abandoned island with 500 French Polynesian-style houses that are entirely covered with greenery. It used to be a popular destination before the beginning of the Yugoslav Wars even though it has no water or electricity supply, this makes Sveti Marko a must-visit exotic mystery!

The Island of Flowers houses the beautiful monastery of St. Archangel Michael and a small population of about a 100 people that lives in bungalow-style houses. It’s connected to the mainland by a small isthmus making it an easy visit!

Don’t let yourself be fooled by the extreme luxury of Tivat, there are cheap activities for everyone such as the Bocce Olympiad, the Tivat Summer Fest music festival (4-6 June) and the Tivat Botanic garden which houses a wide variety of exotic tree and plant species that were given as gifts to Bokan sailors who brought them back from their voyages.

4. Budva

If you’re looking for a perfect balance between beach and nightlife then the Budva Riviera is the place for you!

Budva has some of the most attractive beaches in the Adriatic sea with Mogren beach being arguably the best known and most attractive of them. Accessible only by a 250m long narrow path along the cliffs, Mogren offers relaxation and beauty to all visitors.

Most of the beaches in the Budva Riviera are outside the city itself: Jaz Beach, is a popular concert and festival venue as well as a campground, Bečići has a long sandy beach situated south-east of the city, and Pizana is a city beach next to the Old Town.

The Budva Dancer
Budva’s sand beach

Budva’s nightlife started to emerge during the 1980s with hotel-attached dance clubs. However the first discothèques and clubs didn’t become popular until the 1990s, with numerous open-air clubs opening along the sea promenade. Nowadays Budva’s Old Town and its promenade host many bars, pubs and restaurants, yet two of those are currently dominating the clubbing scene: Top Hill and Trocadero.

Last but not least is the Budva Carnival, a three-day long festive event in happening during late April or early May every year. This Carnival unites people from all Montenegro to enjoy some nice relaxation and party, so why not join?

Come and see it for yourself!

5. Kotor

Yes! I did save the best for last, Kotor is my favorite city in Montenegro, heck in the whole wide world!

Its Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, the ancient walls which stretch for 4.5 km above the city are a World Heritage site protected by UNESCO as well as the Cathedral of St. Tryphon in the middle of the town’s square. Accommodation in this city is quite affordable with many hostels gaming offering a variety of services apart from just a bed, the Old Town Hostel is such a place with numerous tours and beach activities for those willing to take part.

From a boat ride to a party bus visiting all famous beaches in Montenegro, the possibilities for entertainment here are endless!

The abandoned Autro-Hungarian Fortress
View of the Old Town
Kotor from the Fortress

Another great activity is going up to Fort of St. Giovanni, where one can enjoy a breath-taking view of the municipality, the city and the bay. In front of its bay, named Boka Bay, there are two islets very popular as tourist attractions: Sveti Đorđe and Gospa od respectively.

Kotor’s Beach

If you also happen to love cute animals then I have good news for you!

Kotor has a large population of cats with the city having several cat stores, a cat museum, and even a “Cats’ Square”, named Trgodmačaka. You will see these furry creatures walking about everywhere, there’s water and food left throughout the city for them to feed on. Cats have become the symbol of the city to the point of Kotor having its own charity looking out for all stray cats: Kotor Kitties.

Cats of Kotor

Bonus! Pržno

Ok, I’ve talked about every single tourist-known beach in Montenegro but the next one is extremely dear to my heart. Pržno is a virgin beach where one can go camp, have a barbecue, a beach party, anything and not be disturbed by anyone.

Now Pržno does have a touristic part but you need to be sure to go the opposite side if you want to experience the untouched virgin beach. It’s a place only known to locals, not easily found and yet, accessible. People at the end of the working day might go there to unwind and relax, If you’d like to enjoy the sunset, light a fire and have some drinks with the lads or your significant other then be sure to visit Pržno while you’re in Montenegro.

Amusement doesn’t stop just in relaxation though, there’s a small cliff about 10m high where one can climb and jump from into the sea!

What are you waiting for?

Montenegro is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Since the revitalization of its tourism sector, Montenegrins have adapted by offering a wide variety of services and tours. Take a picture of the famous Budva Dancer, enjoy a pub crawl in Kotor’s Letrika Bar, maybe have a spa day in Tivat, there’s something for everyone here: nightlife, gastronomy, culture, beaches, spas, adventure experiences, this are nothing but glances of what this land has to offer.

BBQ in a virgin beach

Montenegro is one of the friendliest countries on Earth, an experience you will never forget nor regret, wherever your travel agenda is taking you this year be sure to book a couple weeks in this piece of paradise. Visit Crna Gora once and you will come back a million times! Guarantied!

Tessa Thompson on Valkyrie’s Sexuality

Tessa Thompson as Valykrie in Thor: Love and Thunder. Image: Marvel Studios With the return of Jane Foster , the addition of the travel Guardians of the Galaxy, and a villain as evil as Gorr the God Butcher , Thor: Love and Thunder has a lot going on. That’s why, while Tessa Thompson’s character Valkyrie is, indeed, queer in the new film , it doesn’t sound like it’s a big part of that story.
“It becomes the only storyline, particularly in a movie like this where you don’t, frankly, have a lot of room for storyline,” Thompson told Yahoo . “So there was a lot of conversation in terms of how to treat that with Valkyrie. And I feel really good, personally, about where we got to.”
Back in 2019, when news first broke of this fourth Thor film, while most headlines were about the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, who’d become the Mighty Thor, there was also the revelation that Valykrie was going to be the first LGBTQIA hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe . That actually ended up being Bryan Tyree Henry’s Phastos in Eternals, but it was still a big part of the development of Thor: Love and Thunder.
“We talked about it a lot, it was big topic of conversation,” Thompson said. “Because I think rightfully there’s this real want in audiences to see characters be very clearly queer or LGBTQIA inside these spaces. And I think it’s hugely important to have representation.”
However, even if King Valkyrie doesn’t find her Queen in Thor: Love and Thunder, the actress believes it could happen in the future. “I hope that she’s a character that fans continue to connect to, that we have a lot of time to explore her, in all of her humanity,” she said. “But whether or not she finds love in this movie doesn’t mean she’s not still a fabulous queer character that is open to finding love when it makes sense.” Thor: Love and Thunder opens July 8. Republican push to recruit election deniers as poll workers causes alarm | US voting rights

Republicans and other conservative groups are undertaking a huge effort to recruit election workers, a push that could install people with unfounded doubts about the 2020 election in key positions in voting precincts where they could exert considerable power over elections.

Sign up for the Guardian’s Fight to Vote newsletter

At the forefront of this push is Cleta Mitchell, a lawyer who was on Donald Trump’s legal team in 2020 and played a key role in his effort to overturn the election. Over the last few months, Mitchell has held “election integrity summits” in several battleground states, convening groups and citizens who continue to believe the 2020 election was stolen. The summits offer in-depth training on how to monitor election offices and how to work elections. At a mid-June summit in North Carolina, Mitchell mocked the term “election denier” and said “whether the outcome was correct, that’s all I deny”. Voter fraud is extremely rare and there was no evidence of widespread fraud in 2020.

The effort, called the Election Integrity Network, underscores how Trump and allies are capitalizing on now deeply seeded Republican doubt about Joe Biden’s victory and are targeting key election offices and jobs that play a considerable role in determining how ballots are cast and counted. The summits are a project of the Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI), a group with close ties to Trump’s political operation, and where Mitchell is a senior legal fellow. Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff, is a senior partner at CPI.

Mitchell has described the effort as a way to take control of the apparatus of local elections, according to ABC News. CPI did not return a request for comment.

“Given that people who were part of the attempted coup are behind this, it’s certainly something that at a minimum we need to be vigilant about,” said David Becker, the executive director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, who works closely with election officials across the country on election administration issues.

That recruitment is happening alongside a similar push from the Republican National Committee, which has already recruited 16 in-state election integrity directors, more than 15,000 poll workers and 10,000 poll observers in battleground states, said Gates McGavick, an RNC spokesman. Officials from the RNC have spoken at Mitchell’s summits. McGavick said the RNC “works with other groups who have an interest in promoting election integrity” but the party was “not part of a formal coalition with any outside groups”.

“Any individual participating in our election integrity program who does not follow the law will be promptly dismissed,” he said.

The effort is focused on getting people to sign up poll observers and challengers as well as election workers who help run voting precincts and count ballots. Parties and campaigns have long hired observers and challengers to monitor the polls, but election workers, temporary employees hired by local election offices, have largely been seen as non-partisan.

Republicans say that they are aiming to correct an imbalance in these election positions, especially in heavily Democratic cities and other areas.

Election officials say they welcome the surge in GOP interest, especially in areas where it can be hard to find Republican workers. Still, there are concerns that conspiracy-minded workers could abuse their positions to slow down the voting process and spread false or misleading information about what they see at the polls.

In 2020, observations from poll observers played a critical role in spreading information that Trump and allies would use to spread the false claim the election was stolen in states like Georgia, Arizona and Michigan. In Detroit, an observer said she saw ballots being delivered in the middle of the night and workers illegally awarding votes to Biden. In Phoenix, those who used Sharpie pens to fill out ballots had their votes rejected by machines, poll observers said. Even though those claims, based on misunderstandings of election rules, were debunked, many of them continue to live prominently among those who believe the election was stolen.

“You have those people who may have worked the precinct who intentionally don’t understand the procedures and that can then, with some level of authority, spread misinformation,” said Barb Byrum, the clerk in Ingham county, Michigan, a state where there is a big push to recruit GOP election workers.

“It is refreshing to see more people are interested in the process,” she added. “With that said, I understand that the Republican precinct worker applications as of recent have been prompted by election conspiracy groups.”

If we start to view our fellow citizens as our enemies, we’re lost.

David Becker

At the North Carolina summit in June, guests received a 20-page document that offered a detailed blueprint for forming statewide and local taskforces to monitor election officials. One section encourages citizens to research whether Republican officials in the state election office are “effective or silent partners”. Another section advises activists to figure out who in the state attorney gaming general’s office is responsible for working with elections officials and whether that person is a “friend or foe”.

That kind of language is “absolutely outrageous”, Becker said. Election officials have faced an unprecedented wave of harassment since the 2020 election and many have quit their jobs.

“They’re citizens. They’re professionals. They’re our neighbors,” he said. “If we start to view our fellow citizens as our enemies, we’re lost.”

The guide also says to monitor voter registration drives and non-profits involved in election work with the goal of finding out “who are they really?”

Attendees were encouraged to sign up for the North Carolina Election Integrity Team (Nceit), a group working to implement many of the guide’s recommendations in each county. The group has been having regular weekly strategy calls.

The event featured speakers from a litany of conservative activist groups, including FreedomWorks, Tea Party Patriots, Citizens United and Heritage Action, according to an agenda obtained by the Guardian. Mac Warner, West Virginia’s Republican secretary of state, also attended the summit and gave a keynote address. Josh Findlay, the RNC’s national director of election integrity, spoke at the event.

Anyone could attend the event, which cost $20 to sign up for. A Guardian reporter who signed up as a guest was asked to leave the event after Mitchell’s opening remarks. “We don’t allow media to come to our summits, mainly because they’re never nice to us,” Mitchell said at the event. “They make fun of us.”

The Guardian obtained a recording of a panel on poll worker and observer training in which panelists acted out different scenarios that might arise at the precinct on polling day.

At one point during the panel, an audience member drew laughter when he asked “at what point do you call 911 and call a sheriff deputy to arrest the chief judge?”

Jim Womack, the Nceit chair, advised attendees to form relationships with local district attorneys. “The DA is going to be your person, the person you need to have a relationship with and be able to contact the local law enforcement to take action on something,” he said.

I’m very familiar with the groups that are staging this. It’s just that, honestly, after 2020, these groups have a charged-up base

Gary Sims

Gary Sims, the elections director in North Carolina’s Wake county, home of Raleigh, said his office had not yet seen a surge in people signing up to work the polls. He noted that state law outlines clear rules that people who work the polls must follow on election day and the consequences of breaking them.

“I’m very familiar with the groups that are staging this. Some of these individuals I’ve been dealing with for over a decade now. It’s just that, honestly, after the events and post-events of 2020, these groups have a charged-up base,” he said. “Before, they didn’t have an audience. Now they have an audience because of that. So they are capitalizing on that audience.”

Sims said he was frustrated to learn that a speaker at Mitchell’s summit had spread false information about Wake county’s processes for transporting ballots. “What they stated was, I want to say disinformation, not misinformation. Because it was not true,” he said. “It’s actually intentionally trying to villainize us.”

The planning underscores what many see as the biggest threat to future elections in the US. Having people who believe there is massive fraud in elections claim they witnessed such fraud could provide critical pretext officials could use to justify not-certifying a valid race. Trump and allies deployed a similar strategy in their effort to overturn the 2020 election.

Byrum, the Ingham county clerk, said that the city of Lansing, which usually receives just a handful of applications for Republican poll workers, had already received about 100 GOP applications. While she welcomed that interest, Byrum said disruptive election workers could slow down the process of voting on election day or cause a delay in counting mail-in votes, which could cause more people to doubt the election results.

Byrum has been encouraging local clerks to place first-time election workers who they are unfamiliar with – Democrat or Republican – in jobs where they will be responsible for passing out “I voted” stickers or have other limited interactions with voters at critical points in the voting process. When she begins training workers next month, she also said she plans to keep an eye out for people who might raise red flags.

“If they are prepared to act in bad faith, or slow down the process, or create any mischief or mayhem on election day, I will make sure they are held accountable in my county,” she said.

Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. sworn in as Philippines’ new President

Marcos Jr., known as “Bongbong” in the Philippines, won a landslide in May 9 elections on a platform of national unity and a promise of more jobs, lower prices and more investment in agriculture and infrastructure. But critics say his rise to power was the culmination of a decades-long attempt to rebrand the Marcos family’s name and image, most recently through a supercharged social media campaign. Marcos Jr., 64, is the son and namesake of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., whose 21-year kleptocratic rule of the country from 1965 to 1986 was marked by human rights abuses, widespread corruption, and plunder of the state coffers. The former senator and congressman took his oath of office at the National Museum of Fine Arts in the capital Manila before Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, according to CNN affiliate CNN Philippines. In his inauguration speech, Marcos Jr. said his “call for unity” resonated with the people to “deliver the biggest electoral mandate in the history of Philippine democracy.”
“This is a historic moment for us all,” he said. “You picked me to be your servant, to enable changes to benefit all. I fully understand the gravity of responsibility you put on my shoulders. I do not take it lightly but I am ready for the task.”
Marcos Jr. thanked his mother, the 92-year-old former first lady Imelda Marcos, who attended the ceremony. He also praised his father, the late dictator, in his speech. “I once knew a man who saw what little had been achieved since independence. In a land of people with the greatest potential for achievement, and yet they were poor. But he got it done. Sometimes with needed support, sometimes without. So will it be with his son — you will get no excuses from me,” he said. Marcos Jr. spoke of healing divisions in the country, promised to grow the economy, recover from the pandemic and lead a more unified, prosperous country. “I am here not to talk about the past, I am here to tell you about our future. A future of sufficiency, even plenty, of readily available ways and means to get done what needs doing,” he said. “I will get fitness it done.”
Activist groups planned to protest the inauguration in Manila, calling for accountability for alleged crimes committed under the Marcos Sr. dictatorship, CNN Philippines reported. On Tuesday, Marcos Jr. survived a last-ditch attempt to disqualify him when the Supreme Court unanimously ruled against two petitions seeking to cancel his candidacy for alleged tax offenses, according to CNN Philippines. Marcos won the election with 31.6 million votes, or 58.77% of ballots cast — a margin not seen in decades — and replaces outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte.
His running mate, Sara Duterte-Carpio, the former President’s daughter, was sworn in as vice president on June 19, and they will serve until 2028. Family legacy Marcos Jr. had previously asked the world to judge him by his actions, not by his family’s past. But his election campaign was dominated by his father’s legacy, including the slogan “rise again” tapping into the nostalgia of some who saw the period under Marcos Sr. as a golden era for the country.
His father’s corrupt and brutal rule of the Philippines was bolstered by almost a decade of martial law from 1972 to 1981. During that time, tens of thousands of people were imprisoned, tortured or killed for perceived or real criticism of the government, according to human rights groups. The Presidential Commission on Good Governance (PCGG), tasked with recovering the family’s ill-gotten wealth, estimates about $10 billion was stolen from the Filipino people. The Marcos family has repeatedly denied abuses under martial law and using state funds for their personal use. Campaigners say the Marcoses were never held fully accountable and victims of martial law are still fighting for justice.
Critics of Marcos Jr. see his rise to the presidency as a whitewashing of Philippine history and an attempt by the Marcos family to rewrite the abuses and corruption committed during his father’s dictatorship.
Outgoing Duterte Marcos Jr.’s inauguration marks the end of a six-year term for Duterte, whose bloody legacy is tied to a nationwide crackdown on drugs that has claimed the lives of more than 6,000 people, according to police. Duterte’s administration targeted civil society and the media — slapping tax evasion charges on local, independent media outlets that challenged the government’s policies and claims, and arresting editors. On Tuesday, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa said the government had ordered her news organization Rappler to shut down. Outspoken Duterte was also known for a history of disparaging remarks, including misogynistic comments about women, the Catholic Church, and world leaders. Some fear Marcos Jr. will continue down Duterte’s path and that disinformation will further obscure the truth, making it harder to hold those in power accountable.
Despite his record on human rights and the Covid-19 pandemic, which worsened the country’s hunger crisis, Duterte remained hugely popular domestically.
Supporters expect Marcos Jr. and Duterte-Carpio to continue Duterte’s policies on infrastructure and his controversial “war on drugs.” CNN’s Mayumi Maruyama and Alice Barnard contributed.

Tropical disturbance shows better organization over Caribbean; forecast to become Tropical Storm Bonnie soon – Orlando Sentinel

A tropical disturbance in the Caribbean is showing better organization Wednesday afternoon and could soon be classified as Tropical Storm Bonnie soon, according to the National Hurricane Center.
“High-resolution visible satellite images suggest that the system may trying to close off a center to the south of the ABC Islands, but the surface observations are still not very conclusive,” wrote Richard Pasch, a senior hurricane specialist with the NHC. “Radar images from Curacao also do not yet show a definite center. The system could make the transition to a tropical cyclone at any time.”
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Hurricane Hunter aircraft investigated the system Wednesday afternoon, but did not find it organized enough to designate the disturbance as a tropical storm. Forecasts call for the storm to strengthen slightly, but fashion no powerful intensification until this weekend as it approaches the southwestern Caribbean, where the system could become the first hurricane of the season.
The National Hurricane Center’s 8 p.m. advisory Wednesday said heavy rains and tropical-storm-force winds are likely to occur through Thursday morning for the Windward Islands and parts of northern Venezuela and northern Colombia.
The system is located about 55 miles west-southwest of Curacao, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph moving west at 21 mph, as of the 8 p.m. update. While the system has remained unorganized, hurricane specialists suspect that could change in the next 12 hours.
“One reason the system has been unable to close off a circulation so far is the very rapid speed,” NHC’s Eric Blake said. But models show the disturbance stabilizing in the evening. Then, the system should hold off from intensifying for two days. By Friday, it could jump in strength again, Blake said.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in place for Trinidad and Tobago; Grenada and its dependencies and parts of the Colombian coasts. As it continues west, the system is expected to be near or over Nicaragua Friday night.
The system has tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 70 miles from the system’s center. If it becomes named, it would be Tropical Storm Bonnie. The NHC gives it a 90% chance for formation in the next five days.
“On the forecast track, the system will pass … near the Guajira Peninsula of Colombia early Thursday and over the southwestern Caribbean Sea later on Thursday and on Friday,” the NHC said. The tropical outlook as of 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2022 shows Potential Tropical Cyclone Two as well as two other systems with a chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm. (The National Hurricane Center) Meteorologists are also keeping their eyes on two other disturbances with odds of becoming a tropical system.
An area of disturbance has increased its showers and thunderstorms overnight and over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. More development is possible, but the system currently remains disorganized. The NHC gives it a 40% chance of forming into a tropical system in the next two to five days as it slowly drifts west across the northern Gulf of Mexico and toward Texas. It is expected to move inland of Texas Thursday.
An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter plane deployed to investigate showed the system was poorly organized.
“Some slow development is still possible and it could become a short-lived tropical depression near the coast before it turns northwestward and moves inland over Texas later on Thursday. Regardless of development, heavy rain will be possible along portions of the Texas coast for the next few days,” the NHC said.
Also, a tropical wave over the central tropical Atlantic is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The wave is expected to come into contact with another tropical wave later this week and could develop. The NHC gave the wave a 10% chance of becoming a depression in the next two days and 30% in the next five days.
If any of the systems develop, they would be the season’s second system after Tropical Storm Alex, which dumped nearly a foot of rain over parts of Florida earlier this month.
After Bonnie, the next two names would be Colin and Danielle.
A tropical system could be named a tropical depression without growing to tropical-storm status. It doesn’t become named until the system has sustained winds of 39 mph and isn’t named a hurricane until it has sustained winds of 74 mph.
The 2022 season runs from June 1-Nov. 30 is predicted to be another above-normal year for storms following the 30 named storms of 2020 and 21 of 2021. Jpedersen@orlandosentinel.com

Google Asks for Permission to Flood Inboxes With Campaign Spam

After years of grumbling from Republicans in Congress, Google has requested that the Federal Election Commission allow a pilot program in which political campaign emails would be exempt from spam filtering.
The new program would allow emails from “authorized candidate committees, political party committees and leadership political action committees registered with the FEC,” to bypass Gmail’s spam categorization system, the filing read. That is, as long as those messages don’t violate the platform’s other rules around phishing, malware, or illegal activity. Google seems to be trying to get ahead of a proposed bill. South Dakota Sen. John Thune and 25 other Republican legislators introduced an act on June 16 aiming to make it “unlawful for an operator of an email service to use a filtering algorithm to apply a label to an email sent to fashion an email account from a political campaign unless the owner or use of the account took action to apply such a label.”
Instead of being screened by Gmail’s spam filter, all qualifying political emails from would instead go directly to users’ inboxes. From there, users would get a “prominent” nudge to either keep receiving emails from the same sender, or to opt out, according to the filing.
The FEC filing was first obtained by Axios. In an emailed statement to Gizmodo, Google spokesperson, José Castañeda, confirmed the company’s FEC request and wrote: We want Gmail to provide a great experience for all of our users, including minimizing unwanted email, but we do not filter emails based on political affiliation. We recently asked the FEC to authorize a pilot program that may help improve inboxing rates for political bulk senders and provide more transparency into email deliverability, while still letting users protect their inboxes by unsubscribing or labeling emails as spam. We look forward to exploring new ways to provide the best possible Gmail experience. G/O Media may get a commission The pending pilot policy comes after years of contention between the company and Republicans in Congress over the alleged political bias of Gmail spam filters. Back in 2020, Florida Rep. Greg Steube showed up at a congressional hearing about tech monopolies to complain that his parents weren’t seeing his campaign emails. “Suddenly, I get elected to Congress, and I’m now up here in Washington, D.C., and my parents, who have a Gmail account, aren’t getting my campaign emails,” Steube claimed . “Why is this only happening to Republicans?,” he asked. More recently, a March study from North Carolina State University’s computer science department added fuel to the fire. The study researchers found that campaign and fundraising emails from conservative groups and candidates more frequently went to Gmail users’ spam folders in the lead up to the 2020 election than those from liberal or left-leaning sources. The researchers found the opposite trend among the inboxes of Yahoo and Outlook users.
GOP politicians, like Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, interpreted the study to mean that conservative campaigns were being intentionally and unfairly targeted by Google. However, the researchers specifically wrote in that study that their observations don’t mean Google was intentionally poisoning its spam filter with politics. Instead, they suggested the observed bias could be the result of how Google and others weigh past user behavior in their analysis of what is and isn’t spam. In other words: conservative emails likely went to spam more often because Gmail users had previously marked similar emails from similar sources as spam.
Google has also repeatedly reaffirmed this. In May, the company’s chief legal officer, Kent Walker, met with republican senators and told them that there is no bias in how Gmail manages spam. “Mail classifications automatically change to match users’ preferences and actions. For example, users can unmark spam, move messages to a different category, or switch categories on or off. Over time, classifications change according to these corrections,” said Google in an explanation of its classification system.
In another statement to Mashable , a Google spokesperson further said that, “political affiliation has absolutely no bearing on mail classifications in Gmail and we’ve debunked this suggestion, which has surfaced periodically from across the political spectrum, for many years.”
It’s also possible that right wing politicians have been hurting their own chances for main inbox exposure through spammy tactics . Donald Trump has even gotten flack from within his own party for his campaign’s hyper-aggressive, misleading fundraising emails . Yet, despite the above, conservative politicians have pushed forward with their anti-spam crusade.
Republican lawmakers have taken to Twitter to voice their support for the bill. “I’m working to hold Big Tech accountable,” tweeted Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst. Rep. Kevin McCarthy from California wrote, “Big Tech has proven itself a bad actor. Time to fight back.” Thune himself posted that Gmail spam filtering is, “unacceptable & anti-democratic.” Google’s efforts may not be enough for republicans. “Consumers want a long-term transparent fix, which is what Senator Thune’s bill would provide,” a spokesperson for the senator told to the Washington Post . Meanwhile, Democrats have a different view. “It’s sad that instead of simply stopping sending spam emails, Republicans engaged in a bad-faith pressure campaign,” said Daniel Wessel, a Democratic National Committee spokesperson, to the Post. “And it’s even more unfortunate that Google bought it.”

FDA Panel Backs Adding Omicron Component to COVID Boosters

June 28, 2022 — A FDA advisory panel on Tuesday recommended updating COVID-19 booster vaccines in the United States to include an Omicron component, while also stressing the need for more information on how well these shots work on emerging strains of the virus.
The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee voted 19-2 in favor of the new formula. formulation.
The panelists voted after the CDC presented new information that showed two highly infectious Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, now make up more than half the number of new COVID-19 cases in the United States.
With earlier vaccines loosing effectiveness over time, and the risk of an increase in cases this fall, “we need to make a move sooner rather than later and direct our sponsors in the proper direction,” FDA panelist Michael news Nelson, MD, PhD, of the University of Virginia, said before the vote.
Peter W. Marks, MD, PhD, the director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation & Research, noted that this is a challenging decision, as no one has a “crystal ball” to tell how the virus – which he called “crafty” — will evolve. “We are trying to use every last ounce of what we can from predictive modeling and from the data that we have that’s emerging to try to get ahead,” he said.
The vaccines would ideally be rolled out in the fall, but there are still questions to be answered about the best formulation. The panel’s vote is the first in a multi-step process before any new vaccine is put to use. If the agency itself follows the committee’s recommendation, the new vaccine cocktail would be considered authorized. But the CDC’s own panel of experts, and Director Rochelle Walensky, MD, must sign off before patients can receive it.

Market Surges at Christies London Contemporary Sale – ARTnews.com

The contemporary art market enjoyed fashion an upswing last night at Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary night sale in London, where mostly British and European buyers swept up 35 of the 40 lots offered (88 percent by lot, 86 percent by value), exceeding the pre-sale estimate of $24 million for a total take of $31.77 million.
Following a record performance at Sotheby’s last week, where his canvas Almost Grown (2000) sold for $3.3 million, Peter Doig made a (very) clean sweep with Night Playground (1997-1998), which took the evening’s top lot at $5 million. (Though Doig has received much critical praise for his work in recent years, money talks: Last night’s sale was the second-highest price paid for his work at auction, though nowhere near the £5.7 million Ukranian billionaire and arts patron Victor Pinchuk paid in 2007 for White Canoe.) Richard Prince’s pulp fictional figure, Country Nurse (2003), slid into second place at a significantly lower $2.9 million, while Gerhard Richter’s stringent exercise in color theory, 1025 Farben (1025 Colours) (1974), trailed closely behind at $2.3 million; Jeff Koons’s Moustache (2003) took the fourth lot at $1.8 million, and Frank Auerbach rounded out the top 5 with Tree in Mornington Crescent (1991-2). Though successful, last night’s performance was nowhere near the £86.24 million garnered in June 2008, a dive that some have attributed to sellers’ reticence to entrust auction houses with major works, especially given recent cutbacks on guarantees. While Christie’s outpaced Philips de Pury & Company’s £5.1 million evening sale from Monday, it fell behind Sotheby’s £25.5 takeaway. Poor performaners included Lucio Fontana’s Concetto spaziale, Attese (1966) which fell short of its £600–900,000 estimate at £500,000 and Concetto spaziale, natura (1959–60) which fizzzled at £1.3 million. Though it did sell, Warhol’s Self-Portrait (1966) commanded only £690,580 of its £500–800,000 estimate, which was lamentably lower than its £1.2 – 1.4 million estimate in 2008.

Sandals Bahamas deaths: 3 Americans found dead at a resort last month died due to carbon monoxide poisoning, police say

“At this juncture of the investigation, we can officially confirm that all three of the victims died as a result of asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning,” the Royal Bahamas Police Force announced in a news release. “This matter remains under active investigation.”
No signs of trauma were found on the bodies, police previously told CNN, and Bahamian acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper had said foul play was not suspected. Police would not comment beyond the cause of death for all three US citizens in the latest news release. The Americans — Michael Phillips, 68, and his wife, Robbie Phillips, 65, from Tennessee, and Vincent Paul Chiarella, 64, from Florida — died over the course of one evening. Chiarella’s wife, Donnis, 65, was airlifted to the nation’s capital of Nassau for further treatment before being transferred to Florida. The two couples had reported feeling ill the night prior and were seen by medical staff, Bahamas Police Commissioner Paul Rolle said in May, and had eaten at different gaming locations. Staff discovered the couples in separate villas the following morning and alerted police. Sandals Resorts said in a statement to CNN at the time, “Nothing is more important to Sandals Resorts than the safety of our guests,” and expressed “deep sadness” confirming the deaths.
