Netflix Buys Up Yet Another Games Developer

Netflix is tripling down on its mission to be more than a streaming service. The platform and production company is also a burgeoning video game developer . On Monday, as an expansion of the company’s foray into gaming, Netflix announced it has acquired Spry Fox—a formerly independent game-maker based in Seattle. The developer is the sixth addition to Netflix’s list of in-house gaming studios, according to the company’s press release.
Spry Fox is known for its cutesy, often pastel-hued games. Its most popular titles include the strategy puzzle Triple Town, word game Alphabear, and life-sim Cozy Grove. “We look forward to creating games with a studio whose values — a relentless focus on employee and player joy — align closely with ours,” wrote Amir Rahimi, VP of Netflix’s game studios, in the announcement.
Netflix first declared its intention to enter the game sphere in July 2021 . Just a couple of months later, it had bought its first studio : Night School. Then, it began releasing phone games, to be played in the Netflix app (note: It’s first attempts were…not great.)
Since those first few clunky months, the company has significantly expanded its suite of available games for mobile play . Not all of them are winners, but there are currently 35 titles to choose from, ranging from RPGs to racing to adventure options. Many of the games are based on popular Netflix shows like Stranger Things or the baking competition Nailed It, and there’s apparently some version of something for everyone on the list. Moreover, Netflix has an additional 55 games already in development, according to its most recent quarterly earnings report. health Games are currently ad-less with a Netflix subscription, and there’s no apparent monetization push being implemented yet. But a big part of the company’s game strategy comes down to building another revenue stream for its intellectual property from shows and movies. Netflix seems eager to multiply viewers through gaming and vice versa. In a shareholder letter from earlier this month, the company cited the boost that the Cyberpunk 2077 videogame got from the premiere of Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series. G/O Media may get a commission Instant Facelift Think of the Foreo Bear as exercise for your face, engaging muscles to provide radiance and lift with lasting results. However, so far the company’s desire for gaming/viewing synergy has yet to materialize. Only about 1% of Netflix’s ~220 million subscribers are playing the company’s games, according to August data from analytics firm Apptopia. But maybe if they buy up just one more indie studio, that’ll change.

Hannibal creator’s Friday the 13th reboot series can’t use Jason

One of the most famous slasher franchises around is coming back, but without its iconic killer. Friday the 13th is getting a prequel series at Peacock, which will be written and showrun by Bryan Fuller, called Crystal Lake. The series will take place at some point before the first movie, but won’t feature Jason or his trademark hockey mask thanks to the ongoing legal battle over the franchise. Essentially, thanks to some strange contracts, and a few very protracted court battles, the rights to the series are split between two separate people, one who owns the first movie, and another who owns the sequels. But, as Scream’s Ghostface wants us to remember, Jason wasn’t the killer in the first movie — his mom was. So while we could certainly get a Mrs. Voorhees in the prequel travel series, don’t expect Jason himself to be showing up or doing any killing. That being said, the idea of a summer camp that’s frequently stalked by killers of one Voorhees variety or another is still probably pretty fertile ground for a horror series. Friday the 13th is far from the first slasher series to get its own spinoff series, too. In the early 2010s, there were also spinoff and prequel series for Scream, Psycho, and even Bryan Fuller’s own Hannibal. Perhaps even more surprisingly, the series themselves ranged mostly from good to great, which at least makes this new project exciting. In fact, there was even another Friday the 13th show, called Friday the 13th: The Series, which aired in the late ’80s and has been more or less forgotten since. Fuller is a television veteran creating several shows over the last 20 years including Dead Like Me, Star Trek: Discovery, American Gods, and the aforementioned Hannibal. Also behind Crystal Lake will be A24, which while known for movies is also the studio behind HBO’s Euphoria. There’s no word yet on when Crystal Lake might come out, but it’s likely more than a year away.

Mexican survivor of Seoul crowd crush feared she’d die in Itaewon

Juliana Velandia Santaella took a photo of young women dressed up as bananas, a hot dog and french fries on the streets of Itaewon at 10:08 p.m. Saturday night. Then she decided to go home, descending a tight alleyway where she would narrowly escape her death.
The 23-year-old medical student from Mexico began to feel squeezed by the crowd, which was slowly pushing hundreds downhill in an alley, the center of an accident that would leave at least 154 people dead and 149 hurt. Her injuries, which sent her to an emergency room and are still debilitating, show what can happen during a dangerous crowd crush. Velandia was separated from her friend, 21-year-old Carolina Cano of Mexico, and started to feel the weight of other people’s bodies crushing her. “At some point, my feet weren’t even touching the ground anymore,” she said. “There was an unconscious guy on top of me, which was affecting my breathing.”
Velandia focused on taking shallow breaths through her mouth as her lungs began to feel like they were being flattened. People around her were screaming for help or calling for the police, she said, but then they progressively fell silent as their bodies grew limp above and below her. Stuck in a pile of people, she recalled, only her neck could freely move as the rest of her body was restrained.
“I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to be next.’ I really thought I was going to die,” she said. “I was completely paralyzed. At some point, I couldn’t feel my legs. I couldn’t even move my toes.”
She was stuck like that, unable to feel parts of her body, until a young man standing on an elevated ledge grabbed her arms and ripped her from the crowd. She said she was able to then look at her phone and saw that it was 10:57 p.m.
After a few minutes, she started regaining sensation in her legs. Even then, “there were so many unconscious bodies on the floor that I couldn’t even walk,” she said.
She managed to make it home, but on Sunday, she developed a fever and spent four hours in the emergency room at St. Mary’s Hospital at the Catholic University of Korea, where she was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a life-threatening condition that involves muscle injury and necrosis as cells — in Velandia’s case, in the leg — begin to die. The muscle tissue releases proteins and electrolytes into the blood and can damage the heart or kidneys or cause permanent disability or death. On Friday, doctors will check her kidneys for damage. Speaking from her dorm room on Monday, she said the pain has gotten worse. One leg is swollen and purple, and she is unable to place her entire foot on the ground as she walks.
Even now, her chest hurts if she breathes too deeply.
Ali Asgary, an expert in disaster and emergency management at York University in Canada, said crowd disasters are complicated and not very well understood.
“Injuries and fatalities in these situations can be caused by a combination of factors working together,” he said in an email. Those factors include the density of people, how strong the walls are, whether the ground is uneven or how narrow the space is, he added. Other safety experts have reported restrictive asphyxia, head trauma and rib fractures as possible causes of injury or death in crowd crushes. And the difficulty authorities often have in evacuating the injured or providing speedy medical care can make things worse, according to Rohini Haar, an emergency physician who teaches at the University of California at Berkeley’s School of Public Health. “Unfortunately, once a crush starts, fashion it’s hard to stop.”
According to Velandia, many people were trying to move bodies to clearer ground to perform CPR as she escaped the crowd late Saturday. Some people who appeared to be lifeless had vomit in their mouths and around them, suggesting they had choked, she said.
She found her friend, Cano, who had borrowed a stranger’s cellphone to call her. The two met in front of Itaewon Station, the place where so many partygoers had started their Halloween night.
“We hugged and we cried a lot when we saw each other, because we really thought the other was dead,” Velandia said. “It’s a miracle that we are alive, really.”

One Year After Facebook Went Meta, It’s Lost Billions

Gif: Surreal Entertainment/YouTube Well, Meta sure is in a bit of a mess. The company formerly known as Facebook rang in its one-year anniversary last week but had very little reason to celebrate. Instead, an unfortunate Q3 earnings report showed that, since its inception last October, the company has lost a gargantuan amount of money in its quest to create “the metaverse”—a hypothetical new realm where it wants all of us to live. How did we end up here, exactly? It all started twelve months ago, when, in the heat of a whistleblower scandal , it looked like Congress might actually crack down on Facebook. Leaked documents—what came to be known as the Facebook Papers —had revealed the company’s harmful impact on young people , its ineptitude with misinformation , and its algorithmic toxicity . As a result, regulation talk was afoot. U.S. Representatives were threatening antitrust action and activists were demanding a break up . Things were looking pretty bad.
It was then that a thunderclap of inspiration must’ve struck over a Menlo Park boardroom somewhere: if things were getting too hot to handle in the real world, why couldn’t Facebook simply invent a new world? Yesss…a new world—this could be the pivot of a lifetime! And hey, the company had changed the rules of the game before—it could definitely innovate its way out of this. Thus, after a meeting I’m sure resembled some watered down version of that “change the conversation” scene from Mad Men, The Facebook Company became “Meta Platforms” and something called the “metaverse” was born. G/O Media may get a commission A gift for literally everybody. Gifts under $20, $10, and even $5. It’s Wish, the catch-all shop for all of the above. What was the metaverse? Zuck and his cohort envisioned a bold digitization of our world—supported by hardware and infrastructure that hadn’t been built yet. It would be fueled by investments in the most emergent and exciting technologies, from virtual reality to augmented reality to holograms to cryptocurrency. As the leader of a push to transform the digital economy, Meta could be a pioneer—an explorer going where no tech firm had gone before. Sure, in a lot of cases, the tech wasn’t quite there yet to actually build this world, but, in the meantime, such shortcomings could be obscured via advertising and animation and hyperbolic rhetoric . All of this could be used to sorta…paint the picture of what the metaverse would look like someday…maybe. Anyway, what did it matter? The point was this: the company had to do something big to make people look at it differently—and this was it.
Yes, Facebook’s transformation into Meta always had to be two things at once: a desperate optics shift and a genuine redirect in business strategy. Maybe the company had always envisioned broader investments in AR/VR but crisis forced it to accelerate? We don’t really know. What we do know is that the company’s massive pivot to a place called the “metaverse” seems to have only caused it more headaches over the past year: namely, billions spent on dubious investments, plummeting profits , worried investors , and a slew of hackneyed digital products that people don’t actually want to use . In a word, Meta’s “first year” has been terrible. Will things get better? That’s unclear. Zuck certainly thinks so, though others have their doubts. We decided to take a look back at the past twelve months to highlight key events involving “the metaverse”—an imagined place that Meta has promised to build but that, as far as we can tell, still doesn’t exist yet. OCTOBER, 2021
Our story begins in the dark days of early October, 2021, when the company known as Facebook is besieged on all sides. Frances Haugen , a former employee turned traitorous whistleblower, has leaked extensive documentation of the company’s sins to the press. The Facebook Papers , first reported by the Wall Street Journal, expose a raft of concerns: antitrust issues, privacy issues, psychological health issues—the list seems endless. Meanwhile, a host of longstanding problems (legal complaints, public distrust, congressional inquiries) compound to place ever greater pressure on what was once the glistening jewel of Silicon Valley.
But then, the pivot occurs. On Oct. 28, after weeks of scandal , Zuck announces that Facebook, which seems to have been making a lot of people angry lately, isn’t actually Facebook anymore. Sure, Facebook, the platform, still exists, but now it is owned by a new company (or, rather…the old company…with a new name) called Meta. This Meta is an exciting place to be, not a bad, scary place like Facebook! Indeed, it’s such a cool place, that it’s going to dedicate itself to exploring a new digital realm you’ll wanna check out, called “the metaverse.”
What is the metaverse? It’s not a new or original concept. In fact, it was originally conceived of by science fiction writers decades ago. In recent years, craven tech companies have been champing at the bit to make it a real thing that they can monetize, and Meta wants to be the leader of the pack. In October, the company releases a stultifying 88-minute video with Zuck to help the public better understand this whole concept/fall asleep instantly: Introducing Meta If you skipped the video, the idea is to put everybody inside a giant digital world that looks like our own. In this world you’ll have an avatar that looks just like you and, because you’ll basically be living in a giant video game, you’ll be able to do whatever you want. How do you actually build the metaverse? If you’re a company like Meta/Facebook, the answer is: shoot fucktons of investment into new AR/VR hardware and technological advancements, while also developing applications and tools that broaden the appeal of VR/AR. Facebook has already been investing in this type of thing for years (its 2014 acquisition of Oculus and the release of subsequent headsets and games show that) but now it’s decided to turbo charge the spending. In some sense, this means that Facebook/Meta is basically trying to turn itself from a social media and messaging company into a social-messaging-and-gaming company, since a majority of VR/AR technologies are currently just an extension of the video game industry. Still, Zuck and fam claim that they’re looking to grow the appeal of these products beyond games—potentially to an infinite degree. That means finding “metaverse” applications for things like business, leisure, education, communication, athletics, and more. The message is basically: We are building the matrix! This is Ready Player One! It is happening rn!
Does the metaverse exist yet? Nope, but it will someday soon! Meta execs tell us: just you wait and see.
NOVEMBER, 2021
Okay! The big pivot into the metaverse has begun. As the company embarks on its long journey towards the imaginary world it wants to create, events in the real world continue to cause it strife. The company also runs into some trouble with its name , discovering that it will have to shell out millions of dollars to various companies that have already licensed the name “Meta” if it wants a branding monopoly on that word.
Meanwhile, a smart-ass animator drops this video lampooning the metaverse and Zuck’s bizarre love of Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce. It’s funny news but also sorta scary. Like, this doesn’t seem that far fetched, actually: Metaverse VR: Demo Experience DECEMBER, 2021
December sees the launch of a flagship metaverse product, Horizon Worlds . Worlds is a free, virtual reality video game, compatible with Meta’s Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets, that is meant as a “ever-expanding social universe.” It’s obvious the company hopes that Worlds will get people thinking about all the possibilities that the metaverse has to offer. However, reviews of the game are decidedly mixed, with PC World calling it “fine,” and Kotaku calling it a “hollow, corporate shell” that does not resemble “any type of social space a human being would willingly want to hang out in.”
Even as Meta trots out Worlds to demonstrate its pivot, controversies from its past persist: the company is forced to admit that, for years, private surveillance firms used Facebook and Instagram to spy on users— some 50,000 people . Meanwhile, members of the Rohingya, an embattled ethnic and religious minority based in Myanmar, sue Meta for $150 billion, alleging that its websites helped the government’s genocidal campaign against them. JANUARY, 2022
Meta has a quiet month, except for its weird unveiling of a supercomputer that it claims will help build the metaverse—though it’s vague on the details as to “how.” Meanwhile, Walmart claims it, too, wants to get in on the metaverse and says its launching an NFT collection that will somehow qualify. This awkward piling-on from the world’s most horrid mega-retailer somehow makes the whole enterprise seem lamer by association. FEBRUARY, 2022
In an unfortunate turn of events, Zuck reveals to employees that they must now refer to each other as “Metamates,” an unequivocally dumb name. Meanwhile, a dire warning from the company of weaker-than-expected revenue growth in Q1 leads to a stock plummet—and Zuck’s net worth, which is tied to the company’s value, loses $30 billion in a single day. People start talking about how doomed Meta might be. Further rain clouds gather as influential Facebook board member and abject comic book villain Peter Thiel announces he is stepping down —ostensibly so he can continue his plan for world domination via other business ventures. The Washington Post darkly suggests that Horizon Worlds could be used by groomers and sexual predators, surprising no one. To top things off, it is revealed that Apple’s proposed privacy changes will cost Meta $10 billion in lost advertising revenue.
MARCH, 2022
Not long after its big stock drop, the grim news breaks that Meta will no longer do employees’ laundry for them. Other onsite perks, like endless free steak dinners (apparently a real thing), will also be curtailed. Meanwhile, a slow churn of creepy advertisements continue to goad the public into believing that, despite their better instincts, they really do want to live in a digital netherworld developed by this guy . Skeptics are compelled to put aside reservations and just submit already. Still, the optics aren’t great. This ad, originally released in November, has all the nightmarish delirium of an acid trip gone wrong: The Tiger & The Buffalo APRIL, 2022
Q1 isn’t quite as bad as everybody was expecting but it’s not great. Meta misses its quarterly earnings projection but not by much (give or take a billion) and adds some users. But, unfortunately, the report also shows that Facebook…er, I mean Meta, sorry…has lost a lot of money over the past few years in VR investments, which are supposed to be the backbone of “the metaverse.” They aren’t doing the company any favors: Meta has apparently lost $20 billion to such investments since 2020. Reality Labs, Meta’s VR unit, is found to have operated in Q1 at a loss of nearly $3 billion. Zuck says this kind of loss is all part of the plan and to just hang tight while they reinvent the wheel. In the meantime, the company continues to generate a series of weird products nobody asked for: Behold, Zuck Bucks ! Does the metaverse exist yet? Nope. MAY, 2022
After Q1’s middling results, the company goes on to release a video preview of Zuck wearing its upcoming VR headset, dubbed Project Cambria (real name: Quest Pro). However, the vid pixelates the headset like it’s someone’s junk on Zuck’s head instead of just some plastic. The video shows Zuck interacting with a cartoon animal that looks like a 3D neopet. It’s unclear what the pixels are all about or whether you have to clean up the cartoon animals’ cartoon poop. JUNE, 2022
As the great adventure continues, most other news in June is overshadowed by the departure of original girlboss Sheryl Sandberg, who quits the company on June 1. Zuck calls it the “end of an era.” Critics note Sandberg’s mixed legacy , as well as the fact that she’s sorta leaving the company with its pants down. With Thiel out and now Sandberg, legacy figures seem to be dropping like flies. During the same month, Meta introduces a store where you can customize your metaverse avatars. It also delays the release of the AR-fueled Project Nazare , what were supposed to be its first metaverse glasses. Instead, it launches an integration that lets you pretend like you’re playing a guitar. Distressingly, a report shows that Meta’s imaginary digital landscapes in Horizon Worlds are already pushing users to exhibit really bad behavior —like simulating sexual assault. Isn’t this the stuff of Westworld?
JULY, 2022
Q2 is when things start to get really hairy: the company’s earnings report reveals slowed growth and its first ever revenue decline . Not great. As critics worry that Meta is on a “ Yahoo-like cliff ,” the company announces a 30 percent hiring slash and starts hunting for lackluster employees to fire. Not long afterward, Meta is sued , yet again, by another company that claims it stole its name. Meanwhile, old problems die hard and the apparitional specter of the Cambridge Analytica scandal rears its data-grubbing head : Zuck and Sandberg will have to testify to Congress about it. During this period, the company is still trying, ever so desperately, to become TikTok (hope springs eternal) via an FB app makeover that looks suspiciously like its competitor.
Does the metaverse exist yet? Still nope. AUGUST, 2022
Amidst the scorching heat of summer Zuck whips out his own metaverse avatar and wags it in the world’s face. It is—as one Kotaku writer put it —“boring, drab, generic, and really shitty.” Other apt descriptions include: “ international laughingstock ,” “ so stupid ,” and “ accurate compared to the real Zuck: the same dead eyes, the same delicate skin .” In short: billions of dollars of investment have made Zuck’s meta-self look like a Sims character circa 2000. What gives? Is this really the sexy alternate reality we’re all supposed to be excited about? Zuckerberg metaverse slammed for ugly graphics That same month, the company also releases Meta Horizon Teams , an interactive “space” that’s supposed to help businesspeople work better together. According to Meta, if you strap one of its Meta Quest 2s on your head ($399.99), you can use it talk to other remote co-workers and also do stuff like write on a digital white board. Unfortunately, it’s unclear why this is better (read: cheaper/easier) than just using Zoom?
SEPTEMBER, 2022
Meta acquires Lofelt , a haptics startup based in Berlin. Haptic tech is the field of replicating the illusion of tactile sensations—otherwise known as touch. Meta clearly hopes that this investment will someday pay off by developing products that horrifyingly make you feel like you’re in the actual matrix. Meanwhile, amidst worsening economic headwinds, a slew of scandals nip at the tech giant’s heels: Instagram is fined $400 million for its mishandling of children’s data in Europe; the company’s own report says that it harmed Palestinian users’ civil rights; Amnesty International accuses the tech giant of “substantially contributing” to the ethnic cleansing of the Rohyinga in Myanmar.
OCTOBER, 2022
Now we arrive in the present—a most unfortunate place to be if you’re Meta. The Q3 earnings report is scheduled for the end of the month and, in what seems like a push to head off any bad news, Meta launches a bunch of new products. The Quest Pro (remember the pixelated thing on Zuck’s head?) is finally released, boasting some of the most advanced tech to date. Some critics like it but it’s also a whopping $1500, making it outside the price range of most folks. Oculus also pushes out a VR multi-player app called Wooorld that lets you pretend you’re in poorly animated versions of famous cities. Despite new releases, bad news can’t be avoided. In the last week of October, the Q3 report reveals that this is truly the darkest timeline and the company has lost some $700 billion in market value during the past year—its stock plummeting 67 percent. Zuck, himself, has lost about $100 billion . The report shows back-to-back quarterly declines and experts say more is expected in Q4. It certainly looks like “the metaverse” is mostly a place where money evaporates into thin air. News outlets begin to question whether the glacier pale CEO will ever listen to reason or simply run his gajillion dollar company into the ground like a failed kamikaze into a wheat field.
But Zuck urges patience . The metaverse is cominggggggg, can’t you see? As proof, during the same month, Meta shows off a video at a company event where it boasts that its avatars—which, until this time, have just been disembodied torsos—will soon (?) come equipped with legs and feet. That’s exciting (?) but it soon turns out that the video is a sham: a follow-up by a news outlet reveals that, while the video seemed to be presented as if it were a live VR demo, it actually “featured animations created from motion capture.” So, basically, Meta is out hundreds of billions of dollars and can’t even muster avatars legs…Does the metaverse exist yet? Uh…

Bayonetta 3 Broken Moon Pearls location guide: Where to find them

In Bayonetta 3, finding Broken Moon Pearls will upgrade your magic. Once you’ve collected four of them, they’ll automatically turn into a full Moon Pearl, which you can use in the Skills menu for both Bayonetta and Viola throughout the story. While Rodin’s shop has a few of them up for purchase, most are scattered throughout the levels. Here’s where to find them.

Keep in mind that this guide is in progress; right now, we’ve covered up through chapter 7, which should be give you plenty of magic to work with for both Bayonetta and Viola.

Chapter 1

In Shibuya, take one of the side streets (the one where you can see a broken bus and some soldiers on the ground) to find the “Blow kisses to them!” trial. Approach the enemies and wait until they attack you. Dodge right before they hit Bayonetta to activate Witch Time. During Witch Time, summon your demon with LZ and press R to blow a kiss. In my experience, the demon blew two kisses, affecting both, and while they were still stunned, she sent another one that finished the challenge. The reward is a Broken Moon Pearl.

Chapter 2

After Verse 1, look to the buildings on the left side — one of them has a sign that says DFH (you’ll unlock a Betwitchment for staring at it for a few seconds). There’s a billboard right next to it. Head over to that spot using the Spider and go underneath to the rooftop there to find a trial. This one is pretty straightforward. There’s a spot that replenishes your magic. Stand on that, then summon the Spider and start spamming bombs. Once you have a few crawling toward enemies, web them all (by pressing R). You’ll have to repeat this a total of eight times to complete the trial. You can also do it in reverse, but this order will save you some time. Once done, you’ll get a Broken Moon Pearl.

Chapter 3

As you make your way through the wreckage in the starting area, you’ll see a floating chest flying in circles. You can either use your summon, do air attacks, or just shoot at it until it’s destroyed. You’ll find a Broken Moon Pearl inside.

For the second one in this chapter, you’ll have to complete a trial encounter. You can find it on top of the rooftop to the left of the torii gate entrance you encounter after climbing up. The trick here is to rank up combo points. Hitting the requisite 5,000 is tough, but I recommend summoning a demon, making as much damage as possible with doing different attacks, and when you run out of magic, switch back to Bayonetta and shoot with her pistols. Make sure to not get hit; Witch Time is in your favor here, and you can use the demon as soon as you’re able to in order to keep up with the combo. Once you’re done, the Broken Moon Pearl will be yours.

Chapter 4

After finishing Verse 1 and heading over to the second island, right before you stumble upon the big locked door, you’ll see a checkpoint altar to the right and a waterfall behind it. Follow the path to the right and turn around the corner to find the key. From there, head down to the waterfall and you’ll find the door in the inner cave. There’s a chest inside.

After Verse 2, before you enter the inner chamber, take a detour to the left side using the platforms around the corner to get to the far end, then hop on the structure above. You’ll stumble upon a chest that’ll activate a time-based puzzle. This one is fairly easy: Just use the Spider to crawl around the wall and grab all five orbs.

After Verse 4, as you make your way through the bridge where the soldiers are cheering you, head over to the first building on the left that you see (there’s one on the right first, and then a second on the left). Head over to the rooftop on the other end and destroy the chest to activate a timed event. Honestly, 30 seconds is a ton of time for this one, so I used the spider form to swing around and grab all five pieces without much issue. Once you’re done, you’ll net another Broken Moon Pearl for yourself.

Chapter 5

After Verse 1, in that same area, head over to the right to find a trial. You have to defeat a couple enemies here that can only be hurt during Witch Time. So, yeah, get ready to parry. I recommend parrying right before you’re about to get attacked to get the prolonged Witch Time. Either go ham with combos or summon Cheshire — up to you. Once you’re done, the Broken Moon Pearl will be all yours.

After Verse 8, you’re going to find a chest to the opposite side of Rodin’s shop station. Destroy it to activate a timed event. This one is straightforward; just make sure to use the double jump and your grappling hook to move faster towards the building. You’ll get a Broken Moon Pearl for your troubles.

Chapter 6

After Verse 4, you’ll stumble upon Rodin’s shop in a long pathway. Using that as reference, head all the way back and turn to the side to find a staircase – there is a trial waiting for you there. The key here is to continue the combo, so it shouldn’t be too hard. Use summons and keep an eye on any upcoming attacks so you can dodge on time. Once you’re done, the Broken Moon Pearl will be yours.

Don’t leave the area just yet! There is another pathway next to the one you’re standing on with two chests. The first one, which is shaped as a triangle on the ground, gives you unlimited energy while standing there. Summon any of your demons and destroy the floating chest from that spot. This will grant you another Broken Moon Pearl for a full Moon Pearl.

Chapter 7

Time for a trial. After Verse 1, as you continue making your way to the level, you’ll find a trial on top of a plateau and right before a waterfall with a locked door. The challenge here tasks you to rack up 5,000 combo points against a single enemy. It’s a bit tough, but here’s what worked for me: Use Ranged attacks when the enemy is far away. As soon as it charges against Viola, prepare to parry. This will give you the chance to summon Cheshire, who can deal a ton of damage and help you with the score. Repeat this a few times and, whenever you have the chance, get up close and personal with a few melee attacks. Just be mindful of not getting hit so the counter doesn’t drop to zero. And again, when in doubt, use ranged attacks. Your reward will be a Broken Moon Pearl.

There’s another Broken Moon Pearl if you follow the path behind the waterfalls in the desert section that has the huge sand river. Before heading there, take a short detour to the right side and go behind the waterfalls. After you’re past the first one, keep on moving to the other end and hop all the way up to the path that leads to a trial on the left corner – you’ll know it’s the right spot cause an enemy is gonna emerge from the sand. From there, look at the opposite side: See that tower? Make a run for the ledge, do a jump and hold it until it turns into the grappling hook, swing yourself, and then do another jump to land on the rooftop. Destroy the chest to obtain the second Broken Moon Pearl.

After you’ve made it through the quicksand, when you cross paths with the two pillars with a staircase in between, take a detour to left side towards that lone tower. If you use the ledges against the mountain, just go ahead and make a double jump/swing towards the other end to find a chest with a Broken Moon Pearl inside.

Actor Steve Martin Discusses His Collection of Indigenous Australian Art – ARTnews.com

Actor and comedian Steve Martin has long had a passion for collecting art—he even ranked on the ARTnews Top 200 Collectors list several times in the 1990s. More recently, he has shifted his collecting focuses to works made beginning in the 1970s by contemporary Indigenous Australian artists. With his wife Anne Stringfield, he’s bought works by Bill Whiskey Tjapaltjarri, Timo Hogan, Carlene West, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, and Doreen Reid Nakamarra, among many others. Some of the works he owns have been displayed in non-selling shows at Gagosian locations in New York and Beverly Hills, California. Most recently, six pieces from his collection were on view at the National Arts Club in New York for an exhibition that closed on October 27. Related Articles To learn more about the exhibition and his collecting, ARTnews joined Martin, National Arts Club executive director Ben Hartley, and the show’s curator, Robert Yahner, for a walkthrough. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity. ARTnews: How did the show come together? Steve Martin: Well, first, let me just say that Robert and Ben did a great job with this. It couldn’t have looked better. It’s an unusual gathering because it’s later work. This work hasn’t really been seen. But how far back do you want to go? As far back as you want to go. Martin: My wife and I lent some pictures to the Australian Consul General’s residence [in New York], in combination with pictures from the Wilkerson Collection, which are earlier pictures. When I say earlier, it means 1970s because the whole movement really didn’t start until the 1970s. And then, is it true that you saw it there? Ben Hartley: I saw it there, and I thought, God, this would be amazing if we could bring some of the works here. And because our fall theme is around “Think Global: New Visions, New ideas.” And the fact that this was contemporary work that followed a very old tradition is something that was very appealing. Martin: Yeah, I thought it’d be good, especially a small show like this, which is concise. And you’re not trying to make too big a statement. Robert Yahner: Yeah, I think that’s the beauty of this show that it is so minimal. Doreen Reid Nakamara, Untitled, 2007, installation view, at National Arts Club, New York. Photo Jane Kratochvil When did you first become interested in Western Australian art? Martin: It was about seven years ago. It all started with one picture by this artist, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri. I just really liked it, bought it, and hung it in our house for several years. I really didn’t know that there was a whole big funnel going back this way of its history. Then, through other venues, I slowly started seeing that there was a whole movement, and I started saying “Wow!” Like I said, I hadn’t really seen anything like this before. And they were available, which is an aspect of the art world now that is the opposite—most things are unavailable. And I loved them. I thought they were great. What’s the experience been like living with these works? Martin: My mind goes to the Rothko Chapel. There are these things that loom in the room and create an environment that’s calming. There’s a lot to look at, as in any good painting. They make you feel you’re in a special place. So, the collection started with one picture. How did one picture lead to the next and then the next? Martin: A lot of it was on the internet—that rabbit hole: “Look at this, look at this, look at this.” But there is a learning curve. I met the right people who helped me. I never really had helped before if I liked it, I could research it [myself]. This was harder to research, and it’s more complicated to understand. There’s an Indigenous element that is very specific—dreaming contexts—that is almost inaccessible [to outsiders]. And it goes back thousands and thousands of years. Some of the knowledge is arcane and private. It actually became an industry for a group of people who were suffering, and they started having an income. And the collecting just took off. I just find them—you can’t pin them down. What I think makes good paintings is that you can’t quite pin them down. Sometimes I just rent a room, hang them up, and look at them, just to see the pictures. You don’t see them when you buy them. You buy them from an image, because they’re in Australia. When you get them, they look great, but you need to see them on the wall, in context. We met one artist, Yukultji Napangati, and we had one of her paintings hanging. She was very involved with her own painting. She would touch it. It was almost like she was reliving it—not so much the experience of painting it but the experience of what the picture is talking about. I see these as narrative abstractions. These works have tales, locations, travels, incidents in them. And the incidents are often mythical or real. Carlene West, Tjitjiti, 2015. Photo Jane Kratochvil How did you go about choosing these six works on view in the exhibition? Yahner: Steve invited us to his home, and I was just overwhelmed by what was hanging on the walls. But then he started handing us printouts of what’s in the collection— Martin: That’s a new feature for me. [Laughs.] I’ve never organized anything, but I thought: This needs to be organized. Yahner: I brought all the printouts back here and started looking through them. These big black-and-white canvases by Timo Hogan and Carlene West—it’s just so exciting when you see something new. Martin: And because these haven’t really been shown, it’s an aspect of art that is still a little bit underground. For example, the story of Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri and Yukultji Napangati is fantastic. They’re both members of the Pintupi Nine, nine people of a family group who were living out in the [Australian] desert who hadn’t come in [from the desert]. A relation drove out to see if they want to come in. They were suffering. There was no water. There was no food, it was a drought. And they decided to come in, and within 10 years, both Warlimpirrnga and Yukultji were major artists. Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, Maruwa WT, n.d. Photo Jane Kratochvil This work by Bill Whiskey Tjapaltjarri, Rockholes and Country Near the Olgas (2008), is so beautiful and so very different from the other works on view here. Martin: The hang here really brings out the color. I thought of it as a monochromatic picture. When we were talking about black and white, I said, “Well, this is almost black and white,” but it’s not at all. Look at the underpainting—it’s such a colorful underpainting. What’s he thinking? The sort of sandy lower right—I don’t even know if you think of it that way—and the black shapes, and reds. And he was 88 when he did this. When I was younger, I traveled from, say, California to New Mexico, and you’d always thought of the desert as monochromatic. But when you’re going through it, it becomes like this. It becomes so colorful and alive. You can’t believe the range of color. How do you think these works are in dialogue with each other? Martin: Some of these pictures are still new to us, so I’m still learning about them. But the National Arts Club has done research, and some of the information is new to me. That Timo Hogan was inspired by Carlene West. Carlene was painting one way, with tight dots. But travel then she started to develop dementia, and the [brushstrokes] began to loosen up. And this is just an explosion from thought to canvas. I just have these two by Carlene. They’re rare, especially this this late period. Timo Hogan, Lake Baker, 2020, installation view, at National Arts Club, New York. Photo Jane Kratochvil About how many works are a part of this collection? And are you still actively collecting? Martin: We have about a hundred. Once you have a hundred, it’s hard to improve it. The good pictures become rarer—and I’m not trying to get 200. In fact, I’ve really enjoyed lending out the pictures because we have so many now, and we can only hang so many. You just can’t get excited and go buy these. You have to understand the provenance issues because they’re not fakes. But there are pictures. They consider poorly provenance because they’re made outside the community. Usually, even though they’re by the artists, there’s an inferior quality to them. And for the support of the community, you have to make sure that they come from the community art gallery. This is just as much about ethics as it is about quality. Was that a huge learning curve? Martin: It was. You just want the line to go back to the right place. And would you say this is your passion now? Martin: Yes. This is really a collection. The other things are just some pictures we have. I love just getting these pictures seen. Why is that important to you? Martin: Well, why are any pictures seen? I like the idea of surprise, especially for the audience going, Oh!

Elon Musk Deletes Tweet Pushing Conspiracy Theory Over Paul Pelosi Attack

Elon Musk used his new social media platform to perpetuate an unfounded conspiracy theory about the Paul Pelosi attack — and he did it in response to Hillary Clinton , no less. The Twitter chief replied to a tweet HC sent Saturday that condemned the attack on the Speaker’s husband, while also calling out the extreme rhetoric of some Republicans and pundits … which she believes is largely responsible for the incident. The Republican Party and its mouthpieces now regularly spread hate and deranged conspiracy theories. It is shocking, but not surprising, that violence is the result. As citizens, we must hold them accountable for their words and the actions that follow.https://t.co/MQor4NDFeE — Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) October 29, 2022 @HillaryClinton Elon chimed in Sunday, saying there may be more to the story than meets the eye … adding a link to a fringe site that uploaded a salacious article/headline regarding Pelosi and his attacker. It’s based on a conspiracy theory that’s caught fire in conservative circles. The theory — and the unsubstantiated article — claims Paul’s attacker was no stranger fitness … but rather, that they had a prior relationship and that things went south during a meetup. Again, there’s been no evidence to support this claim whatsoever … and yet, Elon leaned into it. He has since deleted the incendiary tweet … but the damage is done, because he’s getting slammed left and right for putting out wild rumors — this as the literal executive of Twitter. One of the people who are tearing him to shreds over this is Jimmy Kimmel … who wrote, “it has been interesting, over the years, to watch you blossom from the electric car guy into a fully-formed piece of s*** @elonmusk.” It’s worth noting, for the record, that SFPD has characterized this as nothing more than a break-in/assault on Pelosi — and they even say they witnessed the attacker, David DePape, strike Paul on the head with a hammer before they tackled and arrested him. Paul Pelosi’s Secret 911 Call Saved His Life During Hammer Attack As we reported … Paul made a secret call to 911 while facing off with DePape and spoke in code to the operator to not agitate the guy, while also relaying he was in danger. DePape allegedly asked “Where’s Nancy?” several times … but she wasn’t home at the time. A new report Sunday claims that DePape was also equipped with a bag of zip ties — so who knows what more could’ve happened if Paul hadn’t alerted the authorities when he did. KGO-TV Speaker Pelosi , for her part, says her husband is recovering after undergoing surgery … while also noting she and the rest of their family are traumatized. Reports have surfaced since saying DePape has shared far-right, bigoted conspiracies on his blog … right up to the attack.

Black, Hispanic COVID Patients Less Likely to Get Antiviral Paxlovid

“The issue of equity and distribution of Paxlovid is similar to what we saw in the distribution of the vaccine,” she said. “You have to think about access to primary care pharmacies, particularly in economically disadvantaged communities.”

Community hesitancy also plays a role, Salas-Lopez noted. “These are new vaccines, new treatments, so the familiarity isn’t there with all of our community members, but in particular, our community members who have experienced a lack of trust in the health care system.

“In addition, guidelines for testing and vaccines and medications for treatment can quickly change, making it difficult for providers and community members to stay abreast of all the changes — your head spins,” she said.

Structural racism may also play a role, Salas-Lopez added.

One weakness of the study, she noted, is that the researchers didn’t account for prescriptions given directly at walk-in clinics and drug stores, which gave out thousands of doses of Paxlovid and might have altered the results.

Salas-Lopez said that it’s partly the responsibility of health care systems to end these disparities.

At her health care system, they created a health equity task force to identify the weak spots in health care in their community. They then began outreach programs to close these gaps.

“Health systems have to work hard to address the issue of inequity,” Salas-Lopez said. “It takes a mission and a vision to do that, and then action.”

The report, which followed patients from January to July of this year, was published Oct. 28 in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Live updates: Seoul Halloween crowd surge

An English teacher in Seoul who was passing through Itaewon on Saturday night recounted what she saw to CNN. “There were rows and rows of people with tarps covering them in the street,” said Emily Farmer, 27. Farmer, who was with two friends, said she did not see any crowd control measures in place in the area. The tragedy has killed at least 151 people and left dozens more hurt. Nineteen foreign nationals, from Iran, Norway, China and news Uzbekistan, are also among the dead.  Farmer and her friends were “overwhelmed” by the crowds on the street and decided to enter a bar. Shortly after, rumors started spreading that somebody had died and patrons were not allowed to leave. Farmer said she received an emergency message from the government alerting them to “a dangerous situation in the area.” She was allowed to leave the bar at around midnight and she learned of the tragedy that had taken place just outside. “It was horrible,” she said. “Not everyone died instantly.” “They were still pulling people (out) because it was so crowded,” she added. Groups of people were crying, she added. Many victims were receiving CPR and had their costumes taken off to allow medics at the scene to resuscitate them. She still hasn’t heard back from two acquaintances in the area who she messaged last night. “I’m still in shock. It was obviously very traumatic,” she added.

Cameron Crowe Considers Joining MCU With a Dazzler Movie

Screenshot: Marvel Here’s an acclaimed director who doesn’t shun the Marvel Cinematic Universe . During an interview with Rolling Stone while being profiled for the opening of his Almost Famous musical, filmmaker Cameron Crowe talked about his interest in taking on an MCU film, if there was a right fit for him.Thankfully, he was suggested to look up one X-Men in particular.
“Throw me a Dazzler movie! Let’s do it.” he responded to the idea of his taking on the musical influenced Marvel pop star, they just need to get acquainted first. The character has had a long history of almost making it to the big screen , so this would be a perfect fit. He clarified that he’ll be looking to getting familiar with them, asking, “Who should play Dazzler?” Fan casts have long considered artists like Rihanna ( who just did a song for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ), Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift , or BeyoncĂ© take on the role of the the super sonic heroine who can take sound vibrations and weaponize them into light beams.
When a few names were given to Cameron, he jumped to one name in particular, “I’m feeling Dua Lipa for this. Tomorrow I’ll be like, “Yeah, I’ve been thinking about Dua for Dazzler, you know, I’ve been thinking about this for a while.” And giving you no health credit” he joked to the magazine. And we agree the “I think it’s cool. Doing a movie like that could be a blast. You can have character development and all that deep stuff and also have spectacle. You can do it. And it’s heading there, clearly.” Quick, someone alert Kevin Feige and lets get Dazzler introduced in She-Hulk or Secret Wars. Who do you want to see as Dazzler? Let us know in the comments below! Prominent German Curator Denies Support of BDS Amid Controversy – ARTnews.com

After some German politicians decried his news views on the pro-Palestine Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement, curator Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung became the subject of controversy this week. Ndikung, who is set to start next year as director of Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt museum, quickly spoke out against allegations that he was anti-Israel, telling the German press agency dpa that he did not and does not support BDS. After he did so, Claudia Roth, Germany’s culture minister, rose to Ndikung’s defense, saying that he should be “judged primarily on his artistic achievement.” Related Articles BDS’s stated aim is to place economic and political restrictions on Israel in order to pressure the country to grant Palestinians equality. Within Germany, it has been particularly polarizing. Artists and curators who are perceived to have even indirect ties to it have weathered intense criticism and occasionally even threats of violence. The latest edition of Documenta, the esteemed recurring art show in Kassel, became entangled in the ongoing scrutiny when its curator, the Indonesian collective ruangrupa, was accused of exhibiting an anti-Israel bias. For the show’s detractors, that bias was coupled with antisemitic leanings. Even before the show opened this past summer, ruangrupa faced heated claims that it supported BDS because it included a Palestinian collective named the Question of Funding. When a work by the Indonesian group Taring Padi that featured antisemitic imagery was quickly removed, the allegations deepened, and other groups whose works took up the Palestinian struggle were placed under the microscope. While the show successfully completed its run, the events of Documenta 15 have continued to haunt ruangrupa, whose guest professorship at a Hamburg university has been met with protests. Even before Documenta 15, however, allegations of support for BDS had proven potentially damaging for artists. In 2019, the city of Aachen attempted to pull an award given to the photographer Walid Raad after the local government claimed he was in favor of the movement. In the case of Ndikung, the claims rest largely on a 2014 Facebook post in which addressed an Israeli attack on a Gaza school that left 15 dead. “They will pay a million fold for every drop of blood in GAZA! Palestine shall be free… come rain or shine!” he wrote. The post was surfaced this week by the German publication Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, which quoted several Jewish politicians speaking out against Ndikung. One was Felix Klein, Germany’s antisemitism commissioner, who claimed that Ndikung had ideas that “must be clearly viewed as hostile to Israel.” Ndikung denied this, pointing out to dpa that he is supporter of the Initiative GG 5.3 Weltoffenheit, a resolution by German cultural leaders that explicitly rejects BDS while also noting that politicians’ attempts to ban the group are “dangerous” and that “accusations of antisemitism are being misused.” He specifically addressed the Facebook post, telling the press agency, “Despite the pain I felt, I wouldn’t write it like that today. But I can’t erase the past. Part of my work as director of HKW will be to fight against any form of misanthropy and to stand up for solidarity.” Ndikung is expected to start at the HKW in January. He was artistic director of the most recent edition of Sonsbeek, a Dutch art festival, which he and his curatorial team recently departed, claiming racism, sexism, and “unsupportive conditions.”
