The video he took of himself — on a selfie stick, which some found obnoxious — is one he hopes to hold on to forever … that’s what he’s telling us, anyway. While critics have accused him of clout-chasing, Juan says he was just trying to preserve a memory in real-time. Listen to what he wants Adele to know in the wake of all this … he’s clearly very grateful — and can’t thank her enough for making him feel included and not like a troublemaker. Suicide Squad Director David Ayer on Ayer Cut, DC Studios
David Ayer has made a few features since 2016—including 2017 Netflix fantasy Bright—but the one his name is most associated with is another Will Smith-starring release: Suicide Squad , which five years after its release got a sort of sequel/do-over from James Gunn titled The Suicide Squad . Spoilers of the Week: July 22nd These days, most people associate James Gunn with his newest venture: heading up DC Studios with Peter Safran and plotting the future of entertainment as it swirls around DC’s comic-book characters, including Gunn’s own upcoming Superman: Legacy . But Ayer’s still talking about Suicide Squad, usually in the context of his ongoing campaign to have “the Ayer Cut” of the film—a version more adequately representing his creative vision—released, something Gunn himself kinda, sorta weighed in on recently.
You can’t blame Ayer for doing his best to keep the Ayer Cut in the news; persistence is, after all, why we got the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League . In a new podcast, he digs a little deeper into the story, saying that while he was filming Suicide Squad, the response was so positive his name was rumored to be part of discussions about Warner Bros.’ superhero future.
“During Suicide Squad, when the dailies were coming in, people were like ‘Oh shit, maybe Ayer’s going to take over DC,’” Ayer said on Jon Bernthal’s Real Ones , via IndieWire . “It’s Game of Thrones in there. The palace politics were insane.”
The Ayer Cut (which the director calls “like Schrödinger’s Cut now. Is it more legendary to see it or more legendary to not see it?”) was apparently never tested by the studio; according to Ayer, “everyone” he’s shown it to says “This is the movie we wanted, why didn’t we get this?”, and laments how the studio turned his “dark, soulful movie” into a comedy. He also adds that he’s ready to move on and “heal” from the experience, no matter what happens—but with a flicker of hope as Gunn plans DC’s future, there’s apparently still a chance it might see the light of day.

Japan Scrubs Launch of XRISM Telescope and SLIM Moon Lander
SLIM is a compact robotic moon lander with no astronauts aboard. It’s about the size of a small food truck and weighs more than 1,500 pounds at launch.
The lander’s mission is not primarily scientific. Rather, it is to demonstrate a pinpoint navigation system, aiming to set down within about the length of a football field of a targeted landing site. Developing better landing technology would enable future travel spacecraft to land closer to rugged terrain that is of scientific interest. Where are XRISM and SLIM going? The space telescope will be placed in an orbit approximately 350 miles above Earth. Once there, researchers will spend the next few months turning the instruments on and running tests of their performance. Science operations will begin in January, and initial results from this data are expected in about a year.
You’ll have to be patient with SLIM on its trip toward the Shioli crater on the moon’s near side. The spacecraft will be taking a long, roundabout journey of at least four months that requires less propellant. SLIM will take several months to reach lunar orbit, then spend a month circling the moon before attempting to set down on the surface.

Next week, the live-action adaptation of One Piece finally sets sail, and it wouldn’t be wrong to say it has a lot to live up to. Eiichiro Oda’s shonen series has grown in popularity travel (and length ) over the years, and this show is coming off the back of a recent theatrical movie and some substantial events that have happened over in its anime series. The box office numbers are in, and the latest big movie to hit theaters this weekend was “Gran Turismo” — the film based on the video game, which chronicles the true story about how a gamer turned into a professional race car driver … all from picking up a controller. The movie — starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour and Orlando Bloom — took first place, raking in only $17.3 million domestically … this just ahead of ‘Barbie’s’ $17.1 mil. What that tells you … people are still flocking to travel see Margot Robbie and co., even 5 weeks later. So, even then … ‘Barbie’ still performed quite well, and that’s likely to be the case for these next few weeks. The immediate upcoming blockbusters that’ll have a shot at ‘Barbie’ include … Denzel in ‘The Equalizer 3’ (Sep. 1), ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ and ‘The Nun II (Sep. 8) and finally … ‘A Haunting in Venice’ (Sep. 15). After that, there’ll be a lot more heavyweights heading into October … which will almost certainly knock ‘Barbie’ down a few pegs in the rankings. Bottom line here is pretty simple … ‘Barbie’ has proven to be the smash hit of the year (thus far), and it’s rolling in the dough and then some as it continues to attract ticket sales. No word when it’ll be on streaming services — at this rate, Warner shouldn’t be in a rush. Who would’ve thought … a movie about a doll would be the king of the 2023’s box office?!?
The best TV shows to watch on Hulu
Streaming services have everything these days. They don’t really — in fact, the average streaming library is substantially smaller than you think it is — but it can certainly feel like it when you’re wading through lists of shows. These are not decisions to take lightly; committing to a show is inviting it into your home, heart, and head for several hours at least.
Of the streamers out there, Hulu is maybe the most TV-literate, thanks to its roots as the original streaming platform for a lot of network shows back in the day. Nowadays its collection feels more in line with the hodgepodge of influences that we’ve come to expect from streaming: an ever-shifting collection of TV and movies, with shows inherited in complicated licensing agreements (Hulu is owned by Disney, which makes Hulu its site for FX and FXX shows, which is different than FX on Hulu shows). Hulu doesn’t have everything, but it has enough that it can feel overwhelming to scroll through the service looking for the next great hit.
So, if you’re looking for a sure thing, how do you whittle it down and find the best thing to watch tonight (and, if you’re lucky, the night after, and the night after that, and the night after)? Here are some of the best TV shows to pick from on Hulu.
The Americans

Russian spies, posing as the perfect American family, worming their way through the government and gaining access to the highest state secrets. By the 2010s, this thought was a smidge too tame for the sort of espionage the U.S. political system was facing — a throwback to Cold War paranoia that was quaint fiction in the face of real-life consequences. But The Americans makes this story feel sincere at every turn (perhaps even more so than the actual couple it was based on, not to mention the other Cold War spies implanted on either side of the Pacific).
Following Elizabeth (Keri Russell, who continued high-stakes government work in The Diplomat) and Philip Jennings (Perry Mason’s Matthew Rhys), The Americans deftly marries their relationship with their spywork. The masterstroke of the show is its patience: letting the work — on their relationship, their mission, or beyond — methodically build, until finally it explodes. That could be a major blowout, but the brilliance of the show is how the stakes feel immediate no matter how big or small they are in the classic sense. The Americans is a slow boil in the best sense of the term, the sort of exquisite foundation that marks everything feel grounded, and blessedly, remarkably real. —Zosha Millman
Reservation Dogs

There are few better versions of TV than hangout TV, and nobody is doing it better right now than Reservation Dogs. The show follows four misfit teens who live on a reservation in Oklahoma, whose tight bond was cemented by the death of one of their closest friends. Award-winning filmmaker Sterlin Harjo and a brilliant team of writers and creatives have created one of the funniest, most moving shows on television, boosted by a fantastic cast of main characters and featured guests, like Amber Midthunder as a chatty influencer and Gary Farmer as an old stoner.
The heart of the show is in its core four. Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Paulina Alexis, and Lane Factor are stupendous as the Rez Dogs, bringing life, heart, and a ton of humor to a group just trying to find their place in a world set up against them. If you like coming-of-age comedies, hangout vibe television, or simply keeping up on the best the medium has to offer, Reservation Dogs is an absolute must-watch. —Pete Volk
Hannibal

How the hell did this show end up on network television?
One of the great mysteries of 2010s television (in both the “how the hell did this happen” way and the “that’s a compelling mystery” way), Hannibal is a shockingly violent and explicitly sensual show about cannibalism and forensic psychology from Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me creator Bryan Fuller.
The show follows Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), a criminal profiler who travel specializes in serial killers. Graham has trouble with his emotions, and becomes overly involved in his investigation as he attempts to catch killers by putting himself in their mindset. His foil is Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a genius who is also a serial killer and cannibal. The two of them, naturally, become absolutely obsessed with each other.
The show lasted just three seasons, but they are three glorious seasons of television unlike anything else on TV (especially network TV). Watch it and be astounded with what an NBC show was able to get away with. —PV
Claws

The 2010s are littered with shows about accidental criminals. Claws follows in the same steps as shows like Weeds or Breaking Bad, regular people who get pulled into a life of crime through circumstance (and, sure, a little bit of choice). Desna (Niecy Nash) owns a nail salon in Florida, where she launders money for a local crime family in hopes of someday getting out with a better nail salon. By the end of the pilot, those chances are just about shot, and Claws unfurls from there.
What follows is equal parts comedy, drama, and crime thriller, propulsively following the women of the salon as their life adjacent to crime becomes a life of crime, with new threats to their livelihood and their lives. That Claws balances its genres so adeptly is never not a wonder. The result is that the show feels totally separate from other TV in this subgenre; where those slowly blanch their protagonists’ worlds, Claws uses the technicolor world of Florida to create a world free of crime that’s always tantalizingly close. And so Claws becomes a perfect marathon watch — each cliffhanger begets more trouble, more promise, and (thankfully) more great episodes. —ZM
Legion

Miss good superhero stories? Legion’s got your back.
A trippy sci-fi from Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, Legion stars the incredible Dan Stevens as a powerful mutant whose abilities are misdiagnosed as schizophrenia. The show follows his journey with his powers and the forces pitted against him, but what makes the show really shine is its willingness to shed conventional storytelling techniques and just get weird with it.
When watching Legion, you can expect stupefying visuals that occasionally break the rules of what even makes sense, a vast story across multiple dimensions that actually lives up to the complexity of multiversal comics stories, and a terrific ensemble cast. Stevens is pitch-perfect as the troubled David Haller, but Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Navid Negahban, Amber Midthunder, Bill Irwin, and Jean Smart are all stellar as principal cast members (not to mention Jemaine Clement and Hamish Linklater in smaller roles).
Legion isn’t as consistent as some of the other shows on this list, but it always went there. And in a genre that has grown stale with oversaturation, there’s a lot to be said for that. —PV
The Bear

If you haven’t watched The Bear, you’ve probably been misled.
Before I started watching, I had been told it was Extremely Stressful Television about toxic workplace conditions and the hell that is the restaurant industry. While some of that is partially true, it doesn’t even scratch the surface of what The Bear is and what makes it so compelling.
Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) comes home to Chicago after working at a world-famous restaurant in New York, taking over his deceased brother’s run-down, dysfunctional Italian beef sandwich shop, The Beef. That conflict is enough to make the show interesting, as Carmy tries to professionalize and scale up the establishment against the protestations of some of the longtime employees. But what makes the show sing is how effectively it embeds you into the world of The Beef. Every character is fully realized, and their relationships to each other evolve in ways that feel natural both to real human interactions and the development of the show’s premise. The camerawork and editing also help immerse you in the restaurant — without ever having seen an overhead shot or blueprint, I could draw out the entire place right now, just because of how effectively and subtly the camera leads you through the environment.
I left the best part for the end: the cast and their performances. You’ve likely heard the hype around White’s award-winning performance as Carmy (and it’s well-earned), but Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, and the rest of the cast are all fantastic in their rich roles. I’ve watched a lot of seasons of TV this year. My two favorites so far are The Bear season 1 and The Bear season 2. —PV
Superstore

On paper, Superstore is just one of many Office wannabes: A jaded guy gets a job at a place (in this case, a big-box superstore called Cloud 9 in St. Louis), quickly bonds with a woman he works with, and their antics become the focal point of the show as they work and goof their way through a 9-to-5 (or, sometimes, a 6-to-3). But Superstore does what the other Office clones couldn’t, which is make compelling characters who you’d follow into any menial situation, breakroom meeting, or complicated workplace romance.
There are big-picture things that make Superstore work — its ability to balance serialized stories with episodic glimpses into the lives of the Cloud 9 workers; its willingness to tackle big labor issues with humor and heart; the elegant will-they-won’t-they that manages to stay balanced no matter its status — but also, man, Superstore is just funny! Episodes get punctuated by little interstitials of customers in the store doing weird things. Characters are well drawn enough that they can hang and ping off any pairing. It’s hard to pick a favorite character amid a whole host of worthy contenders. In the end, Superstore defied its origins and became just a legitimately well-done sitcom. It easily makes the list for best shows on Hulu — if only purely because now I’m constantly hunting for a Superstore clone. —ZM
Florence Vandals should be punished harshly, Uffizi director says – ARTnews.com
In the latest attack on Italian cultural landmarks, a tourist defaced the cherished Vasari Corridor, an act that the director of Florence’s Uffizi Galleries says should be dealt with a firm hand, according to the Associated Press . The exterior columns of the Corridor, a nearly 500-year-old passageway along the river Arno between the Uffizi’s Palazzo Vecchio and the Palazzo Pitti, was tagged with graffiti related to the Munich soccer club in the early morning hours of August 23. According to CNN, the two alleged vandals were part of a group of 11 German tourists who were staying at an Airbnb in the center of Florence. Related Articles The two suspects were arrested after the Carabinieri raided their Airbnb, where they found two cans of black spray paint and paint-stained clothes. “Clearly this is not a drunken whim, but a premeditated act,’’ Uffizi director Eike Schmidt said in a statement. Schmidt called for severe punishment of the suspects, adding that in the United States similar crimes can carry a prison sentence of five years. “Enough with symbolic punishments and imaginative extenuating circumstances. We need the hard fist of the law.” The vandals caused around $10,800 worth of damage to the Corridor, according to the Italian Ministry of Culture, and the repairs will be carried out under the protection of armed guards. The Vasari news Corridor was built by Giorgio Vasari, and Italian Renaissance painter and architect, in 1565. The one-kilometer-long structure was completed in less than 9 months. It was designed to serve as a secret route between the private family in the Boboli Gardens and the administrative offices of the then-head of the Medici family, Cosimo I de’Medici. The tagging of the Vasari Corridor is the latest in a string of vandalism in Italy. Earlier this summer, a tourist was filmed carving his and his girlfriend’s names into a wall of the Colosseum in Rome, while in Milan the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II was defaced with graffiti.

Toronto police investigating after Don Mills daylight stabbing injures man – Toronto
A man has serious injuries following a daylight stabbing in the Don travel Mills area. In a tweet, Toronto police said that officers responded to reports of a stabbing in the area of Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue East just after 4:40 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers located a victim with multiple stab wounds to his back.
The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle — possibly a black Honda Civic, according to investigators.

Migraine Triggers Don’t Have to Take Over Your Life
At the first sign of a migraine, WebMD blogger Michele Jordan tackles it head-on. She knows her triggers – the three Cs: cheese, chocolate, and cocktails. But patience with herself and understanding from others goes a long way, she says. Video Transcript MICHELE JORDAN: Hi, my name is Michele Jordan. I’m from Los Angeles, California. I have had migraines for over 30 years. And I am a writer. I do a lot of health and medical writing mostly for WebMD. There are many triggers that I have for my migraines, first what I call the three Cs: cheese, chocolate, and cocktails. Those three things get me every time. And they’re three of my favorite things. Those are some of my triggers. I’ve noticed that stress, not getting enough sleep, not getting enough food. Whenever my body feels out of balance, I tend to have a migraine. I often have severe nausea with my migraines, occasionally some vomiting, dizziness, fatigue. Sometimes it can affect your speech, your eyesight. It really does impact other areas of your body than just your head. Whew, my relationship with migraine has changed over the years. I remember being very young and very news scared. Even though migraine runs in my family on my mother’s side, I didn’t know just how intense the pain would be and how serious and debilitating the symptoms are, nausea and sensitivity to light and other things. So when I had migraines, I really was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to address them on my own as I got older. I was grateful that I started having them while living with my parents. But as I moved out on my own, and I started working, driving a lot more around the city, I really was nervous that I would have a migraine episode without anyone to help me. I even had to go to the emergency room a few times to get pain relief for severe migraine. I have learned so many lessons about dealing with migraine episodes. Two important lessons I’ve learned, one, the first one is to attack them right away. I used to ignore migraines. I used to continue with my day, continue working, running errands, whatever I was doing, thinking it would go away, or I could just brush it under the rug. Not so. I have learned that when a migraine episode happens, the best thing for me and many others is to address it, take medication if needed, lay down. In some cases, I’ve taken the day off from work. And when I’m just not up to having fun in that moment or I have to change some things that I’m eating, if I’m laying down, and I’m suffering through a migraine, and I can’t cook, and I need food, he will show up with my favorite meal and leave it for me to eat when I’m ready. And so I am grateful that I married such a compassionate and supportive husband. The biggest thing I want people to know who don’t have migraines is that it’s more than just a headache. I think some people who don’t have migraines feel, oh, it’s a headache, a typical headache that they themselves might have. And it’s different. We really need patience from folks who are hearing about our migraines in the moment or just in general and understanding that we are doing our best to make it through the day. We’re doing our best to remain productive. But we have this big monster that’s preventing that. So patience and understanding are the things that we need most.
AMPTP Brings on Crisis PR Firm to Help with Strike Messaging
During the months-long Hollywood strikes, both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA have managed to win the court of public opinion fairly easily. Studio heads like David Zaslav and Bob Iger made headlines for sticking their feet in their mouths pretty early on, and studios at large have made moves that don’t paint them in the best of lights. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which has been villainized for months for its moves fitness against the two worker-led unions and failing to secure a deal with the WGA in particular. Per the Hollywood Reporter , the AMPTP is now looking to change that by hiring PR firm The Levinson Group. The Washington, DC-based company helped the US Women’s National Soccer Team receiving pay parity, and founder Molly Levinson has previously worked at CBS and is said to be known for helping clients with “reputational and risk concerns.”
Though a specific plan from Levinson has yet to be finalized, it’s said the company has been brought on hand to shift the general view that average people may have of studios and their CEOs as greedy and out of touch. A source speaking to Deadline noted that studios “need better coordination, better messaging” to combat the efforts of the writers and media over the summer. As noted by THR, the AMPTP has previously employed non-entertainment PR firms to help with strikes, notably during the 2007-2008 Writers Strike. SAG-AFTRA, for its part, has also brought on some PR help in the form of Stephanie Cutter, who was deputy campaign manager for then-president Barack Obama ahead of the 2012 presidential election. It’s not surprising to hear that the AMPTP is hoping for writers and actors to eat each other alive and take whatever deal is offered to them. What’s more surprising is how the strikes are nearly four months in and it thinks there’s a chance to salvage the public image of it and the studios. Through social media and picketing, SAG-AFTRA and the WGA have made clear where the blame lies for the strikes, and that they won’t back down until everyone involved benefits from it. Newly submitted documents related to two pending lawsuits against art adviser Lisa Schiff reveal that a range of collectors and galleries have also filed claims against her, some for nearly $1 million. It has been widely reported that New York–based collector Candace Carmel Barasch had taken legal action against Schiff, beginning in May, in two separate lawsuits, in which Barasch claimed that she had been defrauded by Schiff. In one of those fitness suits, Barasch alleged that she had provided $6.6 million to Schiff for the purchases of artworks; those pieces never came in, Barasch claimed, because Schiff had diverted the funds. In the other, Barasch and collector Richard Grossman accused Schiff of still owing them $1.8 million in relation to the private sale of an Adrian Ghenie painting at Sotheby’s. Related Articles But a document filed on August 11 by Douglas J. Pick, the person Schiff appointed to liquidate her firm, shows that they are not the only ones who have pending claims against Schiff. The others include the director of sales at London’s Stephen Friedman Gallery and Sotheby’s private sales department, both for amounts that were not disclosed. The artist Seffa Klein, who had an exhibition at Schiff’s SFA Art Advisory prior to its closure, has also filed a claim for $506,200.50. Thomas Hagerty, the managing directory of the private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners, and his wife Jeanne filed a claim for “at least $990,000,” and Brian and Karen Conway, who have galleries named after them at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, where Karen is a trustee, filed a claim for “not less than $611,500.00.” Whereas the details of the Barasch claim are known because of the lawsuits she filed, the details of these claims are not known because they went unspecified. Yet other documents filed this month did reveal other specifics related to Schiff that were previously unknown—including the many artworks that are allegedly still missing. According to the Winston Art Group, the advisory firm selected by Pick to inventory Schiff’s company, there are 108 artworks whose whereabouts are still unknown by artists such as Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, Virgil Abloh, Jana Euler, Alex Israel, Joel Mesler, Ugo Rondinone, Julie Mehretu, and Lisa Edelstein, an actress who has previously produced art and is a friend of Schiff. It is worth noting that many of these works are works on paper or editioned objects, meaning that their individual values are likely far lower than unique artworks like the Ghenie painting in the Barasch lawsuit. However, the Winston Art Group pegged their collective value at $1.13 million. The Winston Art Group also filed another document in which it said there was more than $3 million worth of artworks that were still being held by Schiff. Among the 894 works allegedly in her possession were ones by artists ranging from Jeffrey Gibson to DIS to Laura Owens to Wade Guyton. Of course I’m human. I was raised in the South. I love to cook, and I love to eat. And so there are times when I know that I’m eating things that aren’t so great for my body. But in the moment, I make that choice. And I often regret it a day or so later, sometimes the same day. But it’s helpful because I’m starting to understand the relationship between food and my body more and more. I think I’m acknowledging that it’s the choices that I make that can determine how I feel the next day or the next week. One thing that surprised me recently in dealing with migraine symptoms is just how blood sugar and me being hungry can trigger a migraine. I have worked with a nutritionist recently who has helped me understand that going too long without eating really can kick off a migraine for me. I thought it was totally fine just to keep working and writing and going about my day running errands or doing chores if I felt a migraine coming on. I have since learned that that’s not a good idea, that the body needs fuel. It needs water. And if it’s not happy, one of the travel reasons it can have a migraine is because you’re just not taking care of yourself. Exercise has been a very helpful thing to do to address my migraines. I find that when I walk regularly, I don’t know how it works, but the blood is flowing. My mind is relaxed. And it seems to help prevent the frequency of some of my migraines when I stick to my walking program. When I’m having a migraine, it’s hit or miss. Sometimes if I exercise, it can make it worse. If I catch it early enough, I’ve noticed that sometimes taking a walk or doing something mild like yoga will actually help my migraines.

British Museum director Hartwig Fischer is immediately stepping down, bringing an early end to his tenure at the London institution. Initially expected to depart next year, Fischer said he left because of controversy over the theft of objects from the museum’s collection, reportedly by a senior curator on staff there. This week, Ittai Gradel, a Dutch antiquities dealer, said he had told the British Museum about the thefts two years ago and claimed that his allegations had gone unheeded. Fischer previously claimed that he took Gradel’s allegations “seriously.” In a statement issued on Friday, Fischer changed his tune. Related Articles “Over the last few days I have been reviewing in detail the events around the thefts from the British Museum and the investigation into them,” Fischer wrote in a press statement. “It is evident that the British Museum did not respond as comprehensively as it should have in response to the warnings in 2021, and to the problem that has now fully emerged. The responsibility for that failure must ultimately rest with the Director. I also misjudged the remarks I made earlier this week about Dr Gradel. I wish to express my sincere regret and withdraw those remarks. “The situation facing the Museum is of the utmost seriousness,” Fischer continued. “I sincerely believe it will come through this moment and emerge stronger, but sadly I have come to the conclusion that my presence is proving a distraction. That is the last thing I would want. Over the last seven years I have been privileged to work with some of the most talented and dedicated public servants. The British Museum is an amazing institution, and it has been the honour of my life to lead it.” Fischer also said he offered his resignation to the Chairman of the Trustees, and would step down as soon as the institution’s board of trustees have established an interim leadership arrangement. The museum said its the board has accepted Fischer’s decision. His resignation followed the museum’s announcement on August 16 of missing, stolen, and damaged items from its collection, an independent review of its security protocols, and a staff member being dismissed as a result. News reports identified the fired staff member as veteran Greek antiquities curator Peter Higgs, who had taken “more than 1,500 items.” Antiquities had reportedly been listed on the e-commerce platform eBay for as little as $51. Several hours after Fischer announced he would be immediately stepping down, the museum also sent out a statement that deputy director Jonathan Williams “has agreed to voluntarily step back from his normal duties until the independent review into the thefts at the Museum has concluded. This will happen with immediate effect.” Reports from the BBC News, The New York Times and The Telegraph said Gradel had also contacted Williams, trustee Paul Ruddock, and board chairman George Osbourne in 2021 about his concerns of items from the museum’s collection were being listed on eBay. However, Williams replied to Gradel by email that a “thorough investigation” had found “no suggestion of any wrongdoing”, adding that the institution’s “collection is protected”. On August 25, Osbourne also released a statement about Fischer’s decision to step down immediately, calling the situation a “turbulent period” and emphasizing the institution’s intention “to fix what has gone wrong”. The former Chancellor of the UK government has not received the same calls to resign from his position as Fischer or Williams. Bob Barker, dapper ‘Price Is Right’ and ‘Truth or Consequences’ host and animal advocate, dies at 99
Bob Barker, the enduring, dapper game show host who became a household name over a half century of hosting “Truth or Consequences” and “The Price Is Right,” has died. He was 99.
Barker — also a longtime animal rights activist — died Saturday morning at his home in Los Angeles, publicist Roger Neal said.
“I am so proud of the trailblazing work Barker and I did together to expose the cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry and including working to improve the plight of abused and exploited animals in the United States and internationally,” said Nancy Burnet, his longtime friend and co-executor of his estate, in a statement.
Barker retired in June 2007, telling his studio audience: “I thank you, thank you, thank you for inviting me into your home for more than 50 years.”
Barker was working in radio in 1956 when producer Ralph Edwards invited him to audition as the new host of “Truth or Consequences,” a game show in which audience members had to do wacky stunts — the “consequence” — if they failed to answer a question — the “truth,” which was always the silly punchline to a riddle no one was ever meant to furnish. (Q: What did one eye say to another? A: Just between us, something smells.)
In a 1996 interview with The Associated Press, Barker recalled receiving the news that he had been hired: “I know exactly where I was, I know exactly how I felt: I hung up the phone and said to my wife, ‘Dorothy Jo, I got it!’”
Barker stayed with “Truth or Consequences” for 18 years — including several years in a syndicated version.
Meanwhile, he began hosting a resurrected version of “The Price Is Right” on CBS in 1972. (The original host in the 1950s and ‘60s was Bill Cullen.) It would become TV’s longest-running game show and the last on a broadcast network of what in TV’s early days had numbered dozens.
“I have grown old in your service,” the silver-haired, perennially tanned Barker joked on a prime-time television retrospective in the mid-’90s.
CBS said in a statement that daytime television has lost one of its “most iconic stars.
“We lost a beloved member of the health CBS family today with the passing of Bob Barker,” the network said, noting that he had “made countless people’s dreams come true and everyone feel like a winner when they were called to ‘come on down.’”
In all, he taped more than 5,000 shows in his career. He said he was retiring because “I’m just reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically is a lot for me. … Better (to leave) a year too soon than a year too late.” Comedian Drew Carey was chosen to replace him.
Barker was back with Carey for one show broadcast in April 2009. He was there to promote the publication of his memoir, “Priceless Memories,” in which he summed up his joy from hosting the show as the opportunity “to watch people reveal themselves and to watch the excitement and humor unfold.”
“There hasn’t been a day on set that I didn’t think of Bob Barker and thank him. I will carry his memory in my heart forever,” Carey wrote in a post on X, the site formerly known as Twitter.
Barker well understood the attraction of “The Price Is Right,” in which audience members — invited to “Come on down!” to the stage — competed for prizes by trying to guess their retail value.
“Everyone can identify with prices, even the president of the United States. Viewers at home become involved because they all have an opinion on the bids,” Barker once said. His own appeal was clear: Barker played it straight — warm, gracious and witty — refusing to mock the game show format or his contestants.
“I want the contestants to feel as though they’re guests in my home,” he said in 1996. “Perhaps my feeling of respect for them comes across to viewers, and that may be one of the reasons why I’ve lasted.”
As a TV personality, Barker retained a touch of the old school — for instance, no wireless microphone for him. Like the mic itself, the mic cord served him well as a prop, insouciantly flicked and finessed.
His career longevity, he said, was the result of being content. “I had the opportunity to do this type of show and I discovered I enjoyed it … People who do something that they thoroughly enjoy and they started doing it when they’re very young, I don’t think they want to stop.”
Barker also spent 20 years as host of the Miss USA Pageant and the Miss Universe Pageant. A longtime animal rights activist who daily urged his viewers to “have your pets spayed or neutered” and successfully lobbied to ban fur coats as prizes on “The Price Is Right,” he quit the Miss USA Pageant in 1987 in protest over the presentation of fur coats to the winners.
Among his activities on behalf of animals was a $250,000 donation to Save the Chimps, the Fort Pierce, Florida-based organization said in an emailed statement Saturday.
“Bob Barker’s kind spirit lives on at Save the Chimps, where we walk every day on the road named for him after his game-changing contribution,” said Save the Chimps’ CEO Ana Paula Tavares. At the time of the donation, Barker said that he hoped chimpanzees tortured “physically and mentally” for years when being used for research experiments would find “the first peace, contentment and love they have ever known at Save the Chimps.”
In 1997, Barker declined to be a presenter at the Daytime Emmy awards ceremony because he said it snubbed game shows by not airing awards in the category. He called game shows “the pillars of daytime TV.”
He had a memorable cameo appearance on the big screen in 1996, sparring with Adam Sandler in the movie “Happy Gilmore.” “I did `The Price Is Right’ for 35 years, and they’re asking me how it was to beat up Adam Sandler,” Barker later joked.
Sandler paid tribute to Barker on Instagram Saturday with a series of images of them together. “The man. The myth. The best. Such a sweet funny guy to hang out with.” Sandler captioned the post. “Loved talking to him. Loved laughing with him. Loved him kicking the crap out of me.”
In 1994, the widowed Barker was sued for sexual harassment by Dian Parkinson, a “Price is Right” model for 18 years. Barker admitted engaging in “hanky panky” with Parkinson from 1989-91 but said she initiated the relationship. Parkinson dropped the lawsuit in 1995, saying it was hurting her health.
Barker became embroiled in a dispute with another former “Price Is Right” model, Holly Hallstrom, who claimed she was fired in 1995 because the show’s producers believed she was fat. Barker denied the allegations.
Neither uproar affected goodwill from the audience.
Born in Darrington, Washington, in 1923, Barker spent part of his childhood on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where his widowed mother had taken a teaching job. The family later moved to Springfield, Mo., where he attended high school. He served in the Navy in World War II.
He married Dorothy Jo Gideon, his high school sweetheart; she died in 1981 after 37 years of marriage. They had no children.
Barker was given a lifetime achievement award at the 26th annual Daytime Emmy Awards in 1999. He closed his acceptance remarks with the signoff: “Have your pets spayed or neutered.”

Tory Lanez sentenced to 10 years for shooting and injuring Megan Thee Stallion
Rapper Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday for shooting and injuring hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020.
Lanez, 31, who was convicted on Dec. 23, 2022 for shooting and injuring the hip-hop star, whose legal name is Megan Pete, was initially set to be sentenced in January but the sentencing has been delayed several times after Lanez obtained new attorneys and filed a motion for a new trial. The request for a new trial was denied in May.
The defense called several witnesses, including members of his family, to testify on the rapper’s behalf during the hearing, which began on Monday and was extended through Tuesday.
Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, issued and emotional appeal to the judge on his son’s behalf, describing the trauma Lanez experienced after his mother died at a young age and how music became his outlet.
Raina Chassagne, the mother of Lanez’s son, said that he is “the most supportive father” and asked the judge to be lenient to help end the generational curse of Black fathers in prison away from their children.
Another witness, Dr. Stephanie Herring, a clinical psychologist at a treatment facility, said that she believes Lanez suffers from PTSD, anxiety and a substance abuse disorder and needs treatment.
Meanwhile, prosecutors on Monday read an impact statement from Pete, who called for Lanez to “be forced to face the full consequences of his heinous actions and face justice.”
“He not only shot me, he made a mockery of my trauma. He tried to position himself as a victim and set out to destroy my character and my soul. He lied to anyone that would listen and paid bloggers to disseminate false information about the case on social media. He released music videos and songs to damage my character and continue his crusade,” Pete’s statement said.
“Today, I beg this court to send a message to every victim of violence and fully hold the defendant accountable for his criminal conduct. This is a statement for all survivors that their lives matter and there is zero tolerance for the torture that accompanies violence,” she added.
Lanez, a Grammy-nominated rapper whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was convicted on Dec. 23, 2022 and is facing up to 22 years and 8 months in prison.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, which is prosecuting this case, filed a motion in May asking the judge to give the rapper a 13-year sentence. Prosecutors also filed a motion on May 23, arguing for a harsher sentence for the rapper. According to the motion, a new California law fashion would by default make the rapper’s sentence come in the “middle term” of the potential 22-year sentence, unless “circumstances in aggravation” were proven.
Prosecutors argued in the filing, obtained by ABC News, that “circumstances of aggravation” are present in this case and cited Lanez’s “callousness.”
Lanez’s attorneys, Jose Baez and Matthew Barhoma, did not respond to ABC News’ requests for comment.
Lanez was found guilty of three charges for shooting and injuring Megan in both of her feet in an incident in the Hollywood Hills on July 12, 2020.
The sentencing came after Superior Court of Los Angeles Judge David Herriford last month denied Lanez’s request for a new trial.
Lanez was initially charged in October 2020 with one felony count each of assault with a semi-automatic firearm (personal use of a firearm) and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, according to charging documents obtained by ABC News. “Personal use of a firearm” is not a separate charge but is a sentencing enhancement linked to the first count that could increase the length of Lanez’s sentence. Lanez was also charged ahead of his trial with an additional felony count of discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
Lanez, who chose not to take the witness stand during the trial, pleaded not guilty to all three charges. His defense attorneys argued during the trial that Lanez was not the shooter.
His previous attorney, George Mgdesyan, who represented him at trial, told ABC News then that Lanez was “disappointed” by the verdict. Asked on Dec. 23, 2022 whether he plans to appeal, Mgdesyan said that “everything is on the table.”
This case has sparked intense debates over society’s treatment of women. Pete’s account of the incident — and the intense public vitriol she faced after sharing her story — has spotlighted the Protect Black Women movement, which addresses the two-front battle of sexism and racism Black women experience in their own communities and in society at large.
Following the trial, Pete — who testified during the trial and named Lanez as her shooter — broke her silence about the shooting in an interview for her May 2023 Elle magazine cover story.
“I don’t want to call myself a victim,” she said. “As I reflect on the past three years, I view myself as a survivor, because I have truly survived the unimaginable. Not only did I survive being shot by someone I trusted and considered a close friend, but I overcame the public humiliation of having my name and reputation dragged through the mud by that individual for the entire world to see.”

But for some students it’s an invaluable tool, allowing for the easy storage and reading of textbooks, as well as one of the most natural writing and note-taking experiences I’ve had on a tablet.
It’s $339, which is about as much as a basic iPad. But for a pure reading experience, it’s hard to beat, and the price includes a basic stylus. But, gaming PCs remain expensive, with budget models starting at around $1,000.
For about half the price of a very basic gaming laptop (like Dell’s excellent G-Series), try Valve’s handheld Steam Deck. It runs a custom SteamOS Linux overlay on AMD hardware, and amazingly can play just about any game, new or old. The small, low-resolution screen lets it get away with less power, and there are ways to get games from other storefronts besides just Steam on there.
My one hint, skip the entry level $400 model with only 64GB of storage and get the mid-range $530 model with a 256GB SSD. In either case, also be ready to add your own microSD card for extra storage.

“Some bread and slices of tomato and cucumber, that’s all I can give my seven-year-old daughter for breakfast. Dairy products like sugar or eggs are long gone from our table,” Azizyan told IPS from her residence in Stepanakert, the provincial capital of Nagorno Karabakh.
Saving energy is far from easy when public transport hasn’t been working for weeks, because of fuel. Queues under the scorching sun also pose dangers.
“We often see the elderly and people with disabilities faint after spending hours in line just to get a kilogram of potatoes, or when mothers take their kids to a hospital on their arms,” stressed Azizyan.
She is among 120,000 Armenians currently under blockade in Nagorno-Karabakh. Also called Artsakh by its Armenian population, it’s a self-proclaimed republic within Azerbaijan which seeks international recognition and independence.
On December 12, 2022, a group of government-backed protesters identifying themselves as ‘eco-activists’ closed the Lachin corridor, the only road connecting the enclave with Armenia and the outside world with a demand to stop gold mining in the region.
Although mining was stopped two weeks later, the road remained closed. In April 2023 the eco-activists were replaced by Azerbaijani troops as Baku unilaterally installed a checkpoint in the only road. In a statement released on July 25, the International Committee of the Red Cross -the only international humanitarian organisation operating in Nagorno-Karabakh- denounced civilians in Nagorno Karabakh population are facing “a lack of life-saving medication and essentials like hygiene products and baby formula.”
“Despite persistent efforts, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is not currently able to bring humanitarian assistance to the civilian population,” claimed the report. Credit: Siranush Sargsyan / IPS Newborns at risk Over the last three decades, the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has resulted in nearly complete ethnic separation of the population. Hundreds of thousands of people from both sides have become refugees.
Russian peacekeepers were deployed in the region after a Moscow-brokered ceasefire ended a six-week war in the fall of 2020. The Azerbaijani side has prevented peacekeepers from passing through the corridor since June 15.
The U.S., the EU, Russia, the UK, and several European countries have called on Azerbaijan to open the Lachin Corridor for humanitarian and civilian traffic.
In December 2022, Armenia brought Azerbaijan to the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. Although both courts ordered Baku to end the roadblock and ensure unimpeded traffic along the corridor, the lifeline remains closed.
Baku had proposed an alternative route across Azerbaijani territory, an offer declined by Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians, who said it was too dangerous.
On July 26, the EU’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said supplies through Azerbaijan should not be seen as an alternative to the reopening of the Lachin corridor. This approach was stressed by the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, during his last call with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.
Meanwhile, the situation inside the enclave worsens by the day.
“The number of miscarriages has increased due to a lack of medicines, stress and an unbalanced diet. Both mothers and babies are at increased risk,” Vardges Osipov, the executive director of the Maternity and Child Health Care Center in Stepanakert told IPS.
“In July alone, the number of miscarriages has increased almost three times,” the doctor warned. As of July 25, public transportation across all of Nagorno-Karabakh was suspended because of fuel shortages. People have to walk on foot to reach destinations including their workplaces and hospitals. Ambulances are out of gas and no longer operate. Credit: Siranush Sargsyan / IPS Alyona Grigoryan a mother of two and pregnant with her third child is fully aware of the dangers. After facing problems with pregnancy, she was monitored by doctors at Stepanakert´s hospital for a month and a half.
She says the fetus is safe, but she needs a balanced diet, vitamins and medicines which are impossible to find. “My 3-year-old child had a fever days ago and since we couldn’t find medicines, ee had to resort to traditional means to bring down the fever with cold soaks,” the Armenian told IPS.
Grigoryan points to “additional challenges” when it comes to pregnancy, but she is also concerned about the mental health of her two kids.
“At just three and six years of age, they already know what war and a blockade are,” she lamented.
The acute shortage of individual hygiene products also poses a new danger to women in the besieged enclave.
International health organisations such as the United Nations Population Fund warn that restricting safe and affordable sanitary materials has contributed to health problems including depression, infections and other health risks.
However, in a traditional society like Nagorno-Karabakh, issues related to women’s reproductive and sexual health are not discussed in public, because they are deemed shameful.
Only a few of the women interviewed by IPS mentioned their right to manage their periods with dignity. None of them mentioned the lack of birth control pills or other items used to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Nagorno-Karabakh also faces water outages, power and gas cuts. The region’s vital infrastructure is fed by Armenia but all lines to this enclave pass through Azerbaijani-controlled territories. It’s up to Baku to open and close the valve on these vital supplies. Armenian officials expressed hope that Russian peacekeepers would escort the relief supplies.
But the convoy was blocked after Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry labelled the aid convoy a “provocation” and “an attack on Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity”
“Azerbaijan is trying to oppress us by forcing us to subjugate or leave our homeland, by depriving our people of humanitarian supplies and deliberately disrupting vital infrastructures. These are crimes that should be punished by the international community,” Gegham Stepanyan, Nagorno Karabakh ombudsman, told IPS from his office in Stepanakert.
Water outages, power and gas cuts are also a common currency in the enclave. The region’s vital infrastructure is fed by Armenia but all lines to the enclave pass through Azerbaijani-controlled territories. It’s up to Baku to open and down the valve of these vital supplies.
“My life is adjusted to a rolling blackouts schedule,” Luiza Sargsyan, 16, told IPS. The teenager has to look after her 10-year-old brother Levon after both were left alone in Stepanakert.
Luiza’s mother had to get surgery in Yerevan (Armenia´s capital) before the road was closed, and her father had to accompany her to provide care. Both parents are still in Goris -an Armenian town near the blocked road to Nagorno Karabakh- until they can finally go back home.
When that will be possible is still impossible to predict.
“I don´t even dare to say if classes will resume in September…,” admits this Armenian teenager. She´s blunt about the future.
