Turkey says more ships to follow
Russian missiles pound port of Mykolaiv KYIV, Aug 1 (Reuters) – A ship carrying grain left the Ukrainian port of Odesa for Lebanon on Monday under a safe passage agreement, Ukrainian and Turkish officials said, the first departure since the Russian invasion blocked shipping through the Black Sea five months ago.
Ukraine’s foreign minister called it “a day of relief for the world”, especially for countries threatened by food shortages and hunger because of the disrupted shipments.
The sailing was made possible after Turkey and the United Nations brokered a grain-and-fertiliser export agreement between Russia and Ukraine last month. The Turkish defence minister said earlier that the Sierra Leone-flagged ship Razoni would head to Lebanon.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24 has led to a worldwide food and energy crisis and the United Nations has warned of the risk of multiple famines this year.
Russia and Ukraine account for nearly a third of global wheat exports. But Western sanctions on Russia and fighting along Ukraine’s eastern seaboard have prevented grain ships safely leaving ports.
The deal aims to allow safe passage for grain shipments in and out of Odesa, Chornomorsk and the port of Pivdennyi.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Twitter: “The day of relief for the world, especially for our friends in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, as the first Ukrainian grain leaves Odesa after months of Russian blockade”.
Moscow has denied responsibility for the food crisis, blaming Western sanctions for slowing exports and Ukraine for mining the approaches to its ports.
Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said the Razoni would anchor in the Bosphorus off Istanbul on Tuesday afternoon and will be inspected by a joint team of Russian, Ukrainian, United Nations and Turkish representatives.
“It will then continue as long as no problems arise,” Akar said.
Ukrainian presidential officials have said 17 ships are docked in Black Sea ports with almost 600,000 tonnes of cargo, mostly grain.
Kubrakov said more ships would follow. Unlocking the ports would provide at least $1 billion in foreign exchange revenue for Ukraine’s economy and allow the agricultural sector to plan next year’s sowing season, he said.
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv welcomed the shipping resumption, saying: “The world will be watching for continued implementation of this agreement to feed people around the world with millions of tons of trapped Ukrainian grain.”
BOMBARDMENTS IN SOUTH AND EAST
Despite the breakthrough on the grain shipments, the war ground on elsewhere.
Three civilians were killed by Russian shelling in Donetsk region – two in Bakhmut and one in nearby Soledar – in the last 24 hours, regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said.
An important industrial city and transport hub, Bakhmut has been under Russian bombardment for the past week as the Kremlin’s forces try to occupy all of Donetsk.
It is connected to the towns of Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk in Luhansk region, which is almost all occupied by Russia. Luhansk governor Serhiy Gaidai said the road was crucial for delivering weapons to Ukrainians fighting in Sievierodonetsk and evacuating people form that area.
Russian strikes also hit Kharkiv – Ukraine’s second biggest city and situated near the border with Russia – on Monday, regional governor Oleh Synegubov said. Two civilians were wounded, he said.
After failing to quickly capture the capital Kyiv early in the war, Russia has turned its forces on Ukraine’s east and south and has been aiming to capture the Donbas region, made up of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia has been transferring some forces from the Donbas to the southern Kherson and Zaporizhizhya regions.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and Kyiv says Moscow is seeking to do the same with the Donbas and link it to Crimea in the south. Russian-backed separatist controlled parts of the region before the invasion.
Russia invaded Ukraine in what it called a “special operation” to demilitarise its neighbour. Ukraine and Western nations have dismissed this as a baseless pretext for war.
Russian missiles on Sunday pounded Mykolaiv, a port city on the River Bug estuary off the Black Sea that borders the mostly Russian-occupied Kherson region.
Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said more than 12 missile strikes – probably the most powerful on the city in five months of war – hit homes and schools, with two people confirmed killed and three wounded.
Ukrainian grain tycoon Oleksiy Vadatursky, founder and owner of agriculture company Nibulon, and his wife were killed in their home, Mykolaiv Governor Vitaliy Kim said.
Zelenskiy said the businessman – one of Ukraine’s richest – had been building a modern grain market with a network of transhipment terminals and elevators.
“It is these people, these companies, precisely the south of Ukraine, which has guaranteed the world’s food security,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly address. “This was always so. And it will be so once again.”
Zelenskiy said Ukraine may harvest only half its usual amount this year due to disruption to farming from the war. Farmers have reported trying to harvest in between Russian shelling of their fields and nearby towns and villages. Crankworx Summer Series attracts top talent to SilverStar Mountain Resort – Okanagan
The Crankworx Summer Series has taken over SilverStar Mountain Resort for four days of adrenaline-fueled competition. The competition brings with it Crankworx caliver racing and competitors from around the world to the Okanagan.
“Crankworx is the ultimate experience in mountain biking. Born in Whistler, B.C. in 2004, Crankworx has evolved into a multi-stop international festival series. The Crankworx World Tour brings together the best mountain bike athletes to compete in elite-level competitions in a variety of disciplines,” states a press release.
The Crankworx Summer Series takes competitors on a tour to Canadian tracks. This year it’s at SilverStar Bike Park as well as five different mountains in Quebec. “Races and competitions give local and up-and-coming racers a chance to race with national and international heroes, providing a path to potential future Crankworx World Tour greatness, and a real good time along the way,” states the release.

Competing this year is Langley, B.C.’s Chance Moore. He’s hoping to secure a spot in the Redbull Joyride competition that takes place at Crankworx in Whistler Aug. 13 by riding well at the Summer Series.
“I love the adrenaline of it all how big it is and how big you can go, you can push yourself and it’s super sweet,” said Moore. The competition is as steep as the ramps. Moore will be going up against riders like Nicholi Rogatkin from Boston, U.S.
I have always been the type of rider that does a lot of rotations and spins,” said Rogatkin. “Some of the other guys have more technical skills and combination maneuvers but for me, it’s a crowd pleaser, gymnastic style.”
To win the whole thing, the managing director of Crankworx, Darren Kinnaird says the 140 athletes competing this weekend don’t just need to have the right skills and to land their tricks. There’s something else that can bring them the win.
“It’s going to take nerves of steel, what these guys are doing, it’s risky,” said Kinnaird. “They practice so much, you really notice with the best of the best how calm they look when they fitness are in the start gate and when they get on the course, just the confidence they have really shines through.”

Steak Salad Ingredients

If using a skirt steak or flank steak, use a steak marinade to ensure it is tender.
Greens – Romaine lettuce has lots of crunch and arugula lettuce has a distinctive peppery flavor. For the best presentation, choose a blend of a couple of types of greens instead of just one variety.

How to Make Steak Salad
This salad comes together in just a few easy steps but has gourmet-level taste and presentation!
- Grill the seasoned steak per the recipe below and set it aside to rest.
- Toss the lettuce & onions with half of the dressing.
- Add steak slices on top of the salad with the remaining ingredients.

Steak Salad
Steak salad is loaded with juicy marinated steak and fresh veggies, drizzled in a creamy homemade dressing!

Preheat the oven to 400°F. (see notes for grilling instructions)

Remove steaks from the fridge and rest 20 minutes at room temperature. While the steak is resting, wash and chop the remaining ingredients.

Rub steak with olive oil and season with salt & pepper or steak seasoning.

Heat a large oven-safe skillet or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and brown for 2-3 minutes per side.

Place the pan in the oven and roast 10-15 minutes or until steaks reach the desired doneness. *see notes

Remove steaks from the skillet and top with 1 tablespoon of salted butter. Rest at least 5 minutes before cutting.
Salad

Place romaine, arugula, and onions in a large bowl and add half of the dressing. Toss to combine.

Slice the steak after it has rested. Place it on the salad with remaining ingredients.

Drizzle with remaining dressing.
Preheated the grill to medium-high heat. Add the steaks to the grill and cook for 5-6 minutes. Flip steaks and cook for an additional 6-8 minutes or until it reaches 135°F or desired doneness. (*see notes).
Optional Toppings:
Boiled eggs, bacon, croutons, grilled corn, cucumbers
For best results, use an instant-read thermometer to ensure the steaks do not overcook. I remove the steaks from the grill a few degrees before they reach the desired temperature as they continue to cook while resting.
The FDA recommends a minimum temperature of 145°F with a 3-minute rest.

Westworld Fidelity Recap: Season 4 Episode 6
Screenshot: HBO “I only know what I tell me.” This short, stunning line of dialogue is spoken by Caleb (Aaron Paul) to Caleb (still Aaron Paul), both of whom—along with many other Calebs—are in a unique hell in “Fidelity.” He’s already faced the devastating news that he failed to stop Hale (Tessa Thompson) from taking over the world 23 years ago , but things manage to get worse when he discovers as a Host that hasn’t achieved fidelity , he’s beginning to malfunction.
Hale’s been bothering to make 277 previous copies of Caleb because she’s desperate to discover how he was able to resist her mind-control parasite, thus becoming the first Outlier. Her hope is that if she figures it out, she can prevent Outliers from “infecting” her Hosts and causing them to commit suicide. When he was human, Caleb taunted Hale by claiming she knew how he was able to break free of her control, so all she needs to do is keep creating more Calebs until she learns the answer.
Hale tells him all this in his cell, bringing in a comically large hourglass to indicate his incipient demise. She also tells him his daughter Frankie (Aurora Perrineau) is alive, which causes Caleb to break into tears of bittersweet joy, a moment powerfully acted by Paul, even after Hale taunts him that she’s slipped one of her Hosts into Frankie’s Outlier rebellion. After Hale leaves, his cell’s opaque windows become clear, and Caleb gets another distressing shock—he’s not alone. Several other Host versions of himself occupy similar cells, and they’re all in various stages of falling apart.
It’s the first of many entertaining and unnerving moments in “Fidelity” of Caleb getting forcibly reminded he’s no longer human. But luckily, an especially degraded version of Caleb gives our Caleb a clue about needing more time, so he checks the hourglass and finds a small cartridge in it, which knocks him out so he appears to be dead. One of Hale’s Drone Hosts hits the termination button, causing jets of fire to erupt from the ceiling. The only escape is through a grate on the floor… which mysteriously has a small arrow etched into it, indicating how the grate needs to be opened. Screenshot: HBO When Caleb escapes, he drops into a pile of bones and ash—clearly the remains of Calebs who weren’t so lucky. As he travels through the bowels of the Olympiad Entertainment building, he starts seeing signs that he’s not the first Caleb to have made this exact escape. There’s an ashen handprint on a wall, where a previous Caleb braced himself. After a fight with a Drone Host, he finds a bloody handprint on the wall, indicating a Caleb had already experienced that exact same brawl, and perhaps even received the same wound.
But nothing beats the horrific scene Caleb finds after crawling into the vents. There’s a dying Caleb by an opening, and when our Caleb looks down it, he sees a giant drop with the bloody corpses of two other Calebs on the ground who were so desperate to escape they risked the drop. Luckily, the dying Caleb has an idea—to act as a human cushion so our Caleb can survive the fall. It’s a sacrifice, but the two Calebs are united in wanting to contact Frankie. They drop. Our Caleb lives. The other Caleb dies horrifically. And finally, Caleb makes it to the roof of the building, where he uses a construction lift’s radio to send an audio message to Frankie.
It doesn’t require a genius to know that Hale engineered Caleb’s escape; if multiple previous Calebs had taken the same route, Hale would have figured it out before getting to Caleb #278. Certainly she would have searched the building high and low for him to make sure he didn’t get truly free. But Caleb only finds this out after delivering his message, when Hale appears, holding the cartridge she clearly left in the hourglass, and says she’s waited a long time for him to get far enough so she can hear the message in hopes it would contain some clue. It doesn’t, so Hale breaks Caleb’s neck and has a new Caleb Host made.
If you think about it for more than a minute, none of this makes sense. Why did Hale make the escape so elaborate? If everything had to be exactly this way for Caleb to send a message to Frankie, does that mean she was making copies of Caleb specifically to be in the other jail cells to freak him out and give him the clue to the cartridge? Did she place the other Calebs there, or was she intentionally leaving corpses laying about the building for him to find? Also, why was Hale letting this take place in the real world instead of a simulation, saving precious time and resources?
I didn’t care about these questions in the slightest when watching “Fidelity” because again, it was so enjoyably eerie, and I only partially care about them now. I can always do some hand-waving at Westworld when it’s entertaining. What irritates me far more are the two flashback scenes awkwardly crammed into the episode. The first is of young Frankie skinning her knee and refusing to walk on it. Caleb gives her a pep talk, where he reveals the incredibly cheesy way he managed to resist Hale’s flies: “You know what kind of person can’t be beat? The kind that doesn’t give up.” Screenshot: HBO The second stars young Frankie, just after Hale took over the world, finding the young Outlier Jay with her mother. After they escape, Frankie says something about how Jay can be her new brother, which Jay angrily refutes, having lost his actual brother to Hale’s anti-Outlier machinations.
Cut to Frankie and Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) in the present, heading to the desolate remains of Mobworld to revive Maeve (Thandiwe Newton). Frankie is suspicious when Bernard reveals how much he knows about repairing Hosts, and even more suspicious when Bernard somehow knows that even the rooms of Mobworld were able to scan a person’s data instantly by having the room scan Frankie. However, she still wants Maeve rebuilt because she recognized her from long ago, when Maeve came by the house to warn their family to hide. If anyone knows what happened to her father, Frankie thinks, it must be Maeve. When the other rebels join them in Mobworld, Jay (Daniel Wu) announces Hale knew they were coming, and that there’s a traitor among them. Frankie instantly shoots Bernard, who she pegged as a Host the minute Bernard took her scanned data, which could be used to make a Host version of her. (Bernard’s reason for making the copy: “It’s complicated.” Sigh.) However, she wants both Bernard and Stubbs alive at least long enough for Maeve to be completed, much to Jay’s displeasure. That gives Bernard an opportunity later to tell Frankie that one of the returning rebels is one of Hale’s Hosts, but he—somehow—doesn’t know which one it is. It’s Jay, as Frankie discovers when he says something about being like a brother to her, which tips her off thanks to the ham-fisted flashback from earlier. They have a big fight, and the reawakened Maeve kills Jay and rescues Frankie at the last second. The end.
Still, “Fidelity” is an effective episode thanks to the classic Westworld mind-fuckery of Caleb’s storyline—one good enough that I don’t mind the rest of What the Hell Is Going on With Christina being delayed for another week (or more). But there are only two episodes left and the world is still under Hale’s thumb, Caleb’s non-functional, Christina is probably Dolores but with her memory erased, and Bernard still isn’t telling anyone what the plan is. Season four has been a marked improvement over last season, but it’s high time Westworld picks up the pace. Screenshot: HBO Assorted Musings: Bernard specifically mentions Hale has one of those mega-simulators, which is leading me to be pre-smug about my belief that Dolores is in it, generating narratives for the Hale-controlled people in the real world.
You’re telling me that there’s technology that can remotely find people who break free of Hale’s mind control, but there’s no test that can differentiate between a Host and a human? Like, shouldn’t everyone in the rebellion have to walk through a metal detector every once in a while? How can the Drone Hosts hear someone blink, but even with that map that locates Outliers, seemingly can’t distinguish them otherwise?
How did Hale know the rebels were coming to the city if she hadn’t health replaced Jay yet? And is this something meaningful to the narrative or just a plot hole? You truly never can tell with Westworld.
One of Caleb’s memories is of walking in a field with his daughter—and it looks almost exactly like Maeve’s frequently shown memory of her walking in a field with her daughter. Is this just a parallel, or has some of Maeve’s data made it into Caleb’s core?
Do nurses really eat their patient’s pudding while they’re unconscious, or was Caleb’s future wife just a monster of the highest order? Want more io9 news? TMZSports.com Former Univ. of Washington football star Ben Burr-Kirven appears to believe the Pac-12 is toast … and he tells TMZ Sports he’s hoping his alma mater bolts to the Big Ten or Big 12 before it officially collapses. The ex-Huskie linebacker, who won Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year back in 2018, broke down his thoughts on conference realignment with us out at LAX this week … and he made it clear, he wouldn’t mind seeing UDub leave its current home after USC and UCLA jumped to the Big Ten earlier this year. “I don’t know what they’re going to do,” Burr-Kirven said of the Pac-12. “It’s going to be interesting. I’d imagine — if I was betting — more and more teams are probably going to leave because it will be hard to get into big bowl games without competitive games to be playing in.” “So, we will see what happens.” Burr-Kirven isn’t sure what Washington’s next move will be, but he tells us if he were travel running the show in Seattle, he’d jump to the Big Ten or Big 12.
